HTC Desire OR Samsung Galaxy S?

I'm in the market for a new phone, and have narrowed it down to those two.

My initial instinct was HTC, but when i went to have a play, i spotted the gorgeous screen on the Galaxy S.

Now i'm torn between the two, fixed on one for a minute then changing my mind and preferring the other offering.

I have until Tuesday to decide but there is no difference in price, it is purely down to the phone.

So the obvious answer is ask you lot... However having seen how long the Desire thread is, i'm guessing that the recommendation is going to be that?

Hit me with pros/cons of each please , reviews aren't really helping with most outcomes saying they're both brilliant.

Re: HTC Desire OR Samsung Galaxy S?

I would be interested in hearing this as well as my contract finishes next month, so will be looking to upgrade maybe. However, I haven't had a hands on either of them yet, and I get the feeling that will be the deciding factor in the end.

Re: HTC Desire OR Samsung Galaxy S?

Both are good phones, however it will come down to your preference between HTC Sense UI and Samsungs TouchWiz (or whatever its called). I would suggest you play with each at a store. The Samsung does come with Swype input as standard, so thats a plus!

Re: HTC Desire OR Samsung Galaxy S?

I have a Desire and love it to bits. However, the Galaxy S does look like a very well specified phone, especially with the increased internal storage for apps, the super amoled screen and the faster graphics processor...

Personally I really like the HTC Sense UI and the touchwiz interface is never the most positive aspect of reviews of Samsung phones in recent years, and most people agree that this is one of the biggest downfalls of the Galaxy against stock phones like the Milestone or Nexus One or equally well skinned phones like those with the latest HTC Sense.

It's a tough one, that's for sure. I think personally the Samsung is a little too big, design is a bit too much like an iPhone copy and I would have to root it myself to get rid of the Sense interface.

Both great phones, I don't think you'll be unhappy with either to be fair!

I like Sense because, well, mainly for the reason that everyone else loves Sense TBH... It is a very intuitive GUI... (Even if that is quite a bizarre concept)

However, i also like Touchwiz, sure it is very iPhone esq, but that in itself isn't a bad thing... Items are easily accessible and everything is laid out simply right there in front of you...

I do like the way swype works, and is very easy to pick up, but then i have no problems with tapping buttons fast which i am probably faster at tapping than swyping, using multiple digits, so while it is a nice feature, it is somewhat redundant for me (well, unless i get it and pick it up ofcourse...)

That is my problem, i don't dislike either GUI and i don't prefer one over the other (well, perhaps sense slightly edges it, but nothing enough to swing a decisions) [plus there will no doubt be some cooked ROMs around...]

That was the main thing that made me take notice... The screen, it is just beautiful, even with bright light it appeared very clear (hard to try and test in a store environment though so i may not have been entirely accurate)
I see where they are coming from in that Touchwiz seems to lay things out in a simple way, giving you access to lots of little pieces on a single screen rather than a few big pieces (if you see what i mean)
It's a tough one, that's for sure. I think personally the Samsung is a little too big, design is a bit too much like an iPhone copy and I would have to root it myself to get rid of the Sense interface.
I see where you're coming from size wise, as it is quite a tall beast, but that's just more real estate, and i'm blessed with big deep pockets

I'm not entirely convinced that an Apple esq layout is overly bad, it seems to have shown it's stars with apple users loving it, and seems to be a good way to display lots of different information in one go.

Both great phones, I don't think you'll be unhappy with either to be fair!

    Ben
I don't think i would be either, but i've got to attempt to choose one over the other, which is turning out to be quite hard, as neither has anything major to turn me off...

I may end up with the desire from a purely user base point of view, seeing as the more users, the more choice i am likely of have in terms of support/updates.

That and the desire *seems* to be slightly more structurally sound (again hard to gauge instore thanks to being tied to a post with wires flying off in all directions...).

    Cheers guys

Re: HTC Desire OR Samsung Galaxy S?

Got one of each sitting in front of me here. My opinion is SGS = bigger screen, slightly faster with 2.1 (vs desire 2.1), great with launcher pro, and very light but feels a bit flimsy. Compared to the desire it's missing a button and all the buttons are touch buttons (not physical). Overall prefer the desire, but you can't go wrong with either... and with 2.2 the desire it is now faster

    This

I have an SGS and it's great, only thing I prefer with the Desire is optical trackpad, the ease of getting roms for flashing it, HTC update schedule (dont expect much past 2.2 on SGS) and the slightly rubberised back on it for grip (the SGS feels a little slippery in sweaty palms, especially when trying to lock if held in the left hand

It will depend on what HTC has in store at the high end. When the desire came out they dropped the hero really quickly. It took from october till about april for them to release a firmware update. Luckily the Homebrew scene has some great people like the villain team there.

I think i'll go for the Desire then, i don't want a flimsy feeling phone.

Plus there seems to be much more of a user base

Cheers guys, now i just need to hope that O2 take delivery of them tomorrow, before I finish my deliveries in the area...

Compared to Samsung who promised an update for the original Galaxy and never delivered

You'll be happy, I've loved mine! I think the build quality of the desire feels very good in your hand, I personally use a "barely there" Casemate shell which protects the back and sides of the phone and then the screen protector included with it and it still feels slim and tactile.

Re: HTC Desire OR Samsung Galaxy S?

I ended up with a SGS, tried three stores and all had sold out of the desire. So i got them to put a galaxy to the side for me, the last one too :-D

Loving it so far, posting from it now as it happens.

Was just stating one of the reason's I'd get a Galaxy S, no need to get defensive.

I've had both, but sold my PSP as I didn't use it anymore. DS gets the occasional play.
