    android phone, what one?

    Hello

Looking for a new, android based phone.

I want something near the hardware spec of a galaxy S, which is ~£300.

£300 is a bit too much, though (i intend to buy payg and use with giffgaff for the unlimited interwebs). I looked at a Tmobile pulse for £100, the spec is a bit too low.

    So what exists between £150-250?

    needs:
    capacitive touchscreen
    higher res than pulse (320x240?),
    faster cpu 800+

    thanks

HTC Legend should meet all your criteria... If you are lucky you might be able to find a 2nd hand Desire for £250.

Edit: actually the CPU is only 600MHz

    +1

If you can get a desire for sub £300 that should be your first port of call. Once you have it proceed to root it and stick on a custom froyo rom from modaco and you'll never look back!

Wait until the end of next month when the Desire HD comes out, if you cant stretch to or find one on decent contract then I'm sure there will be people getting rid of the older phones..

    Re: android phone, what one?

I just picked up the Acer Liquid from Expansys for £199 -5% quidco in free delivery.
800x480 screen 3.5" capacitive, Snapdragon underclocked to 768mhz, inc a 2GB card, updated it to 2.1 at the weekend.

    Not without it's flaws specifically:
    - Its a GEN1 model not the more usual CUS2 model that sold most in the UK so finding the official patch ment trawling the net. I have the links to the ACER servers that host the 1.6 service patch and then to the 2.1 main update.
    - No nipple/optical trackball.
    - No Flash.
    - Rare model hardly any specific cases, though I got a perfect fit case made by Golla from T-Mobile for £6
    - Hissy unimpressive sound from the 3.5mm jack (smaller the head/earphones the worse)

    I like:
    - Pretty much as high spec as you can imagine for sub £200
    - Very high pixel density, makes text very nice and sharp
    - Included Apps are generally good
    - Looks far nicer in the flesh, everyone who I emailed and then saw it in the flesh think it looks way better
    - Exclusivity, Lady in the T-Mobile shop coohed at it whilst wondering what it was.

    Things I have learnt:
    - Do not bother using a Google Account that does not end in @gmail.com or @googlemail.com
    - Use the Power Widget
    - Use Dolphin Browser
    - Android Market Place is a mess
    - Double check an app's security requirements before installing

awesome, is it easy to update, and do you think it will get further updates?

this is about the right spec and price, but are there any others?

    thanks

Both updates a pretty similar, install the acer tool, it will then request you plug in your phone, then step away from the pc and make a up of tea or something. The 1.6 update is really bad at reporting what it is doing so just wait it out. If you download the wrong update, unplug the Liquid, remove the battery for 10+ sec, switch it back on and you should be ok to update.

    Here are the urls:
    Upgrade URLS:

    http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...=Acer&SC=TWN_9
    http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...cer&SC=EMEA_18

I got the first url from my liquid by using the check for updates feature on the phone, then taking the short cut from the microsd through a card reader. The second took some trawling. I believe all of the Liquids Expansys have are the GEN1, just check underneath the battery that you have a manufacturer date of December 2009 or do the check for updates option and look at the url in the shortcut as it will either contain GEN1 or CUS2.

As for Froyo, the Liquid E is the same as the Liquid bar 512mb of ram Vs 256mb of the non-e. Engadget China checked with Acer that the Liquid E and Liquid would get Froyo and the representative said yes. However this should be treated as 100% rumor, there is no official press release for this incoming update. It is supposed to drop in Q4 2010. If you really must have 2.2 guaranteed the Liquid is not for you. However the Liquid E has only been out since early summer so it should be due at least one update and to not have it for the non-e would be quite difficult, especially being the 2.1 update called my phone the Liquid E haha.

the wildfire looks like the safe choice, the San Francisco looks like the one with the most potential, the widfire, being HTC will have shedloads of support while the SF, being veeery nice spec and dirt cheap could attract a lot of devs.

id get the SF myself, absolute bargain.
