Yeah I def wouldn't have bought the Hero, my mate has one at work and its a real step down from the Liquid.
I really like HTC, but its like comparing a 8800GT Vs a 5770. Not fair on either side.

Back to searching after finding out how bad total pda's support is (almost 1 hour and 20 minutes on phone on hold)
Someone left a note on a piece of cake in the fridge that said, "Do not eat!". I ate the cake and left a note saying, "Yuck, who the hell eats paper ?
What about a Palm Pre? The operating system is great but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. If you're unfamiliar with webOS Palm have posted plenty of getting started with webOS videos on their Youtube channel.

The Orange San Francisco is worth a look at:
http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-channe...ml#post1984872
It is around £100,has a 600MHZ CPU,over 400MB of RAM and a 800X480 OLED screen supposedly.
Quick update, you can get a brand new Palm Pre Plus on O2 PAYG for £169.99 which despite the hardware's age is a bargain. Once you've experienced the elegance of webOS it's hard to use anything else! They're also offering the Palm Pixi Plus for £109.99 on PAYG, same OS but different form factor and slightly lower specs.
Still sort of in the mist of looking, I picked up a acer Liquid and within 2 days it annoyed me more than any other phone I've ever owned, the wifi died completely and does not even see any networks anymore, the on screen keyboard is very flaky as well
I looked at the Palm Pre and didnt like the layout of the phone and after spending some time using the wifes Sony X10 I've falling in love with the Android OS!
I'm looking at the San Francisco and I'm now very temped to spend the extra for a HTC Desire or Sony X10 (full size)

Well imho I wouldn't bother with an X10, having used one for a few days I really didn't like the shape feel or software (It was still running Android 1.6 when most other phones were at least on 2.1, and it was clunky). And the UI was nowhere near as good as HTC's Sense UI. So if you're thinking of spending the extra then I'd definitely go for the Desire. It's the best phone I've ever had (I currently own a Nexus One, iPhone 3GS, HTC Magic & Desire), so much so I paid out of my own pocket for it (I work for a multinational mobile phone company, so don't usually buy phones myself). Having said all that the San Francisco looks to be amazing value with really good specs for the money. If it gets a good developer scene behind on say XDA or Modaco then if could be a really, really good phone.
well am currently on iphone 4g and it's great
Hate to say that I like the X10 really, nice 4 inch screen and well built, the only thing letting it down is tat it's still on Android 1.6 and that should be sorted by the end of this month

Have you considered going under that budget? I have recently purchased a Sony Ericsson Elm and I could not be happier with it. It supports Wi-Fi, has your browser and has a 5megapixel camera (a good one at that too) along with LED flash. The only downside to the phone is the fact that the network connection struggles at times - although I haven't noticed any difference when I am calling or receiving calls. With a better network coverage this shouldn't really be a problem.
It also comes with applications such as Facebook, Twitter and also supports Youtube videos. Really couldn't ask more from a phone that looks great, works great and gives you so many features - all for under £100 in UK retail.
Here's what I would do: Orange san francisco phone (£99 or less) with a £10 a month giffgaff rolling contract. Best bargain to be had for awhile!
