Someone left a note on a piece of cake in the fridge that said, "Do not eat!". I ate the cake and left a note saying, "Yuck, who the hell eats paper ?
Do you specifically want SIM free or do you want to go on another contract?
Acer Liquid from Expansys is a nice option, but too much at £199.
How about a T-Mobile Pulse (not mini) or the Samsung Galaxy Portal?
I'd rather have sim free because I have a virgin sim (everyone else in family is virgin), I'd pay the extra if it was worth it

Hmm sim free I am not sure what else you would get. Really the HTC Tatoo, Galaxy 3 or Galaxy Europa are your options from Play.com.
I have a Liquid, it came with Android 1.6, I'm on 2.1 official and 2.2 has leaked a couple of times so it looks like I will get Froyo as well.
The T-Mobile Pulse is unlockable if that is enough for you, I believe it can be done for around £15. Modaco has the details.
I don't have a wide range of knowledge, I can only suggest what I got. It's not as good as the HTC Desire, but then that is £400.

Wifi, 3G, twin-led flash, very mature software now. And the relatively narrow screen makes single-handed use simple.
The Acer Liquid looks nice, Tatto and Nokia 5800 are ugly, I like the Hero
Anyone used the HTC Touch HD?

FYI you can get the Liquid in Black if you don't like white.
Well my workmate moved from a Touch HD to a Desire. Wm6 is kind of a dead end at this stage, at least Symbian has some sort of future.
The LG Optimus GT540 is another option, but that seems to be stuck on 1.6 and has a resistive screen
Going to go in town and have a good look at handsets today, I really do like the look of the acer

The Nokia 5800 is a terrible phone. Not really a smartphone and not even a good feature phone. My better half has one and it really is terrible.
The Liquid is all gone at Expansys, Total PDA have it still at the lower price (£199).
Just ordered the Acer Liquid from Total PDA
Thanks for all the help

Advice on the Liquid:
- Don't use the included screen protector, it's too thick and insulates the screen against touch, I use mine bare, though I have heard the thinner ones on ebay are a nice comprimise.
- It will either be a GEN1 (europe) or CUS1 (US) model, mine is GEN1 here are the update links:
Update Android 1.6 to Acer's 2nd build of it: http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...=Acer&SC=TWN_9
Update that to Android 2.1: http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...cer&SC=EMEA_18
If you have CUS1 use http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...cer&SC=EMEA_27
- Case, I use a Golla Catch XL, its a perfect fit and has a built in cloth that cleans the screen of grease, very handy to hide your unlock swipe. Got my one as end of line from the T-Mobile shop in the highstreet for £6.
- The copy of Twidroid included in 2.1 uses the old authentication system for twitter, so won't work. I'd reccomend you use Toutier or the Official Client. FYI, Fixed in the upcomming 2.2 release by including the official client and Acer's own combined Twitter/FB app.
- I use Acer settings to switch off 3G when I am not using it and I use the power widget to turn off syncing when I am not connected. It's a bit of a faf, but it really improves the battery life.
- General Android note, if you don't use an app, uninstall it. Also be really careful what an App requests access to when you go to install, most novelty apps do not need access to all of your contacts, data, gmail etc.
