Re: Your top 5 phone apps

    1. Japanese - Best Japanese dictionary software I've come across and reason I use the iPhone.

    2. AnkiMini - Excellent spaced repetition flashcard application.

    3. SoundHound / Shazam - Great for identifying a tune you randomly hear.

    4. Pieco - Haven't tried many Chinese <-> English dictionary, but this one seems decent.

    5. Tap & Track - Very good diet diary / Calorie counter

I've excluded on the list basic phone functionalities (call, text, contact, calendar, clock, calculator, camera, music playback, voice recording etc.) and web applications re-designed for mobile such as GoogleMap (which would've made the list otherwise), YouTube, Facebook etc.

My phone is largely used as a study tool (possibly more than as a phone - go figure). It's great being able to gradually revise thousands of words over the months while commuting, and quickly look up/save new words encountered during language exchange conversations.

Re: Your top 5 phone apps

If you don't mind I will post only 1.

It's available to any winmo 6.5(+) smartphone and is the absolute, complete version (in fact with a few bugs removed). I give you Pocket UFO. Yup as in UFO: Enemy Unknown/X-Com defence from back in the 90's. It's pretty stable and they've though about the interface nicely.

I've almost played through a full game (up to having an avenger and the required captured aliens to start the final couple of missions, just having the balls to go do it).

Re: Your top 5 phone apps

Great thread, some handy apps on here.
    Here's my £0.02, for Android:
    * Connectbot : an ssh client
    * Wifi Analyser's already been mentioned and covers WiFi connectivity very well, so for the 3G network analysis I'd have to say RF Signal Tracker.
    * gvSIG mini : offline mapping and grown-up GIS, uses many free sources including Open Street Map (which isn't as bad as you might think!)
    * Pixelpipe : send photos to the server of your choice, supports microblogging, geotagging.
    * Bambuser : video stream from your phone, instantly publish video. Works well on WiFi, barely works over 3G.
... actually, all that lot cost less than £0.02!
