    new contract phone

my contracts due for renewal at the beginning of next month and orange have so far offered me a HTC Desire for free on an 18 month contract.

I am quite tempted by it, but knowing how quickly new models come out and current models can be dropped, i am wondering if i should get the desire and be happy with it for 18 months, or get something thats a little newer.

any thought's on whether i should get the desire or something else?

HTC Desire is a good phone still one of the best right now. You can also have a look at the HTC Desire HD.
New phones are a few months away or early next year I think. When we should see 1.5ghz processors and NVidia Tegra phones.

    Re: new contract phone

I'd see if you can get the Desire HD. Regardless of the increase in spec, the new version of HTC Sence would be worth it in my eyes. I doubt if it is going to be back ported to the Desire, I could be wrong though.

There isn't much in the way of price difference from a retail point of view, £30 I think, so they may be bale to go to the Desire HD depending on how good a customer you are to them

    Re: new contract phone

used to be good, but i keep going on cheaper contracts as i dont use it as much now.

been with them 5 or 6 years i think and the desire is on a raccoon 25 contract i think

my only question with the desire HD is, is it too big??

looking at the specs its 8mm taller, and 5mm wider, but does it feel that much bigger in the hand?

The processor is twice the speed of touch HD. It's got a bigger screen. I haven't honestly seen the phone, but I've been stalking it for months, ever since the leaked photos *drool*.

I've told myself it's either I'd get the HD or the Z. But I heard some issues with the Z's keyboard... maybe HTC fixed it I'm not sure. I heard there were also some initial firmware issues with the HD, so HTC slightly delayed the launch date. So I suggest updating the phone as soon as you buy it.

    Re: new contract phone

The Desire HD is more like the Touch HD2. I'd go into a store and cop a feel

If they don't have a Desire HD on show, fondle the HD2, they are similar enough. Also, see if they have a boxed version you can have a look at that dousn't have the silly security cord on the back.

    Re: new contract phone

might go and do that, i dont like getting something without at least trying it in my hand first.

    2 questions sprung to mind.

do you think there will be custom roms available from the likes of XDA dev, i've got quite used to flashing new roms onto my touch HD every month or so for something new to try

and does anyone know if orange actually stock the Desire HD?

    Re: new contract phone

hmmm the Desire HD isn't on their website, but then the Motorola Flip Out was available in store weeks before it appeared online (my better half was thinking about getting one). Best speaking to them direct.

I haven't tried any custom ROMs since I got my Desire, I haven't felt the need, I like how my handset it as the moment.
