Apple ipod knackered, apple won't replace - advice needed.

    Hi All,

I bought a 16gb 2G touch 18 months ago and in the last 2 months the power button has been increasing the volume (and turning the screen on and off) and the up volume turning the screen off (and increasing the volume). This last week or so the left earphone stopped working and it is definately the ipod. Took it into the apple store yesterday to be told its out of warrenty, they don't do repairs and if I wanta like for liek replacement its £100. or I can have a 10% discount on a new ipod.

Its fair to say I am pretty unimpressed by those options and this will be the last ever Apple product I buy. I think I am going to start off by complaining to apple and maybe look into how much a repair will cost.

Seems to me that I am not the only one with this issue either:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread....readID=2439996

If my ipod is not alone in this issue, it might suggest a manufacturing defect. My xbox had a manufacturing defect thatc aused it to RROD after 2 and a bit years, and MS extended the warranty to cover it. The way I see it Apple should do the same.

Anyway, how do you guys think I should proceed here?

lol, while I am rather underwhelmed by Apples repair/returns policy I don't think I have much to fear from White helicopters.

I think they didn't do anything wrong, its over a year old so its not in warranty. If you bought a mp3 player from somewhere else they would tell you its out of warranty too.

Re: Apple ipod knackered, apple won't replace - advice needed.

Yeah, but they would also offer me a repair most likely. I think maybe we should start lobbying for longer minimum manufacturer warrantys because 18 months for a £240 device is frankly rubbish.

i can think of several examples where I have had manufacturing defects on a device show up after 12 months and the company has replaced it.

    Xbox 360
Logitech G7 gaming mouse (got a rev MX back)
Maxtor hard disk (got a slightly bigger disk back on that one!)

There are probably others that I can't remember.

I don't see the point of ipods, it's an waste.

All phones today can play music and they often have memory cards, most have an 6/8 GB memory card, you can buy biggers versions if needed, but you can easy store enough music on that to play.

Re: Apple ipod knackered, apple won't replace - advice needed.

Well, I have a desire as well which is my stand in media player however I don't really like using the battery up on playing mp3's. Admittedly the ipod touch was total overkill for what I used it for, but then I bought it before decent touchscreen android devices became available.

Anyway, people praise Apple for the hardware and I might have until this happened. Don't buy it, its crap. (I say this after having discovered loads of other people ahve the same issue with many different ipod versions. it's not an uncommon problem)

Don't forget there isn't such a thing as the '1yr warranty'

I'm suprised Saracen hasn't posted but if you want to take it further I think you need to get it checked by an independant engineer, send the report to the manufacturer via their complaints process & 'prove' it's a manufacturing defect.

I'd expect a £240 device to last longer but there isn't a fixed period of time. Depends how much you think it's worth it :/

Do the right thing G4Z - Bin it and buy a Sony X series

EDIT: You do remember how Apple dealt with the manufacturing defects of the Iphone 4? They pretty much told everyone that had the Iphone that they failed at using an Apple product and that God hadn't graced them with the knowledge to correctly hold an Apple product!

The company is a joke and will continue to be while the mass flocks of sheep continue to buy their products

Proud to say i've never owned an Apple product in my life.

The warranty is only for a year, so they would only fix it for free if he had applecare or it was less than a year old.

He was told they would not fix it but would he could pay for a replacement, Sony does the same thing for PS3, they won't fix but for £140 they'll swap it for another one.

I'm pretty sure UK law doesn't say that warranties only last 1yr and its UK law that matters not some stupid up their own bottom company...

UK law says warranties should really last 6 months, assuming we're being realistic (i.e. electricals, as opposed to food). Beyond that, there's no guarantees, unless you can prove it was inherently faulty when you bought it, and you can convince someone that it hasn't lasted a reasonable length of time.

In real life, relating to small purchases such as this, it might as well be 6 months under law.

Pretty sure that in the UK 12 months is the minimum manufacturers warranty for electrical goods by law.

No i think the burden of proof before 6 months is on the supplier after 6 months its on the customer to prove it was wrong and a reasonable amount i guess can be worked out by the cost so paying £240 for 18 months is that really worth it... £13 a month
