I can imagine that doing certain things would be better on larger screen, but I suspect it would feel far too big in my pocket. I'll need to have a proper go with it sometime.

I sold my iPhone 3GS to get an HD Desire and I don't regret it at all. People will say about the size of it but I love the fact it has such a large screen. It doesn't feel any bigger in my pocket than what my 3GS did.

That's the exact same reason why I decided to go with the Desire Z. HOWEVER, I must say, the desire Z has its flaws as it's thick. Heaviness I actually really love about the Z. The thickness buggs me sometimes. The HD bugged me because the battery cover and sim cover seemed really difficult to remove and I was worried that eventually after a few times of prying open and closing it would get loose or something. + the HD's battery cover doesnt have a clip mechanism for the battery, so if the battery door comes loose your battery will slip right out without you knowing it (of course that is worst case scenario).

Actually no, I've had my Desire since the stock became available on O2, think that was about June? Considering how "long" i've had it i'm surprised I still can't put it down! Personally the Desire HD would be too big for me, I don't have the worlds largest hands, and there doesn't seem to be much extra benefit of the desire HD other than the newer version of Sense UI.

    Re: New Phone

i would have to agree the desire is an awesome phone i myself upgraded from the touch hd
to the Desire hd and couldn't have been happier. WM 6.1/6.5 doesn't come close to android.
if your in no hurry to upgrade i would wait, its mobile world congress in the middle of feb.
at which there are many new phones being announced lots of which will be sporting dual cores.
also a handful already announced like the Motorola atrix/droid bionic, galaxy S2, LG optimus x2.
upgrading now just to have a sleuth of much better devices come out a month later would really annoy me
    but maybe thats just me.

EDIT: the HD is a lot more than just a bigger screen. it has a much better camera with dual flash, newer processor (45nm vs 65nm with upgraded gpu), more ram, more internal storage, wifi N, SRS Sound & Dolby Mobile.
