The Desire may well have the power and the memory of a PC from a few years ago, but Android, and the apps that come with it, cannot assume the device has that kind of functionality, it needs to be able to work on much more modest hardware, hence why it halts standard apps when they are not in the foreground. You would also complain (as would many many more people) if a YouTube video was to cause hang ups any other problems if a call came in while you were watching a video because it ended up continuing to play in the background.
That is the way Android is designed, that's the way it is supposed to work for some very good reasons. How do the other handset OS's handle this situation?
