Samsung B2710 Solid Immerse: Long term review

    23 Jan 2011

My trusty Nokia 5500 Sport has really had enough now. Purcahsed as the first in the shop in Oct 2006, it's had a right hard kicking for over 4 years. Dropped a thousand times, been on beaches, in snow, and recently dropped into a pan of boiling pasta at Jiff's house, this phone is rock 'ard. But the key pad's been replaced twice now, and the screen's got dust in.

So off to the Orange shop I went, determined to get another Nokia for ease of data transfer... and I fell for the B2710 Solid Immerse.

It's home now, charging, and I did what I NEVER EVER do normally... I purchased with no review reading. My missus was straight on the web when I got home and afew people are warning of rubbish battery life, but i shall await my own finding on that.

Mean time... the menu's are a doddle. The shortcut options are two fold. I can drop the icons onto the desktop that Orange software allows, and I've got 4 that suit, including the phone status for battery life and 3G signal.

The camera is a 2mp so far out of date BUT, once again I shall await actual results, as a 2mp of good quality would kick the crap out of a 5 mp that blurred everything.

    Torch is sublime

I've got a compass on it now too which my oldest phones from Nokia had but the 5500 left out.
(I used the old compass phone a fair bit many times. It won't lead you to pin point safety, but it's excellent when looking at buying a new house, and in the dark, while wandering round a housing estate, working out which way the sun rises before deciding to visit for a viewing!)

The camera OPTIONS work well. It's got a "smile" function, so as someone lets lose with the cheesy smile it snaps automatically (as per many new comapct digi's, notably the Sony models) and it's pretty fast at grabbing someone's face as the focal point and holding it as they mkove about. So, I'm holding out for good news on photo's this next few weeks.

Loud speaker is good.. will try it handsfree tomorrow in the car to see if shouting works!

Lanyard loop at the top will be useful on my old man's boat.

I've dropped it twice already today, and it's light, and plastic, and rubber edged and is clearly hard as nails. So more good news.

All in all... all it has to do is text and ring people and we'll be on our way to happyness!

Re: Samsung B2710 Solid Immerse: Long term review

    Day one, with new phone.

Well, last night, at around midnight, I tried playing Snake and Tetris. I did ok on Tetris, and then went back into it to play again and then had a "yes/ no", which I, wrongly presumed was asking me to start the app.
But I got the lovely message to say I'd spent £5 on tetris. Genius.

So I checked the Snake version, read the text box and it didn't say play.. it said pay.

In short, there are NO free games, they all cost a fiver, and you get one go on each.

Rang Orange this am who assured me that if i'd not downloaded it, it wasn't a charge, just a phone message incorrectly coded. I asked them to check, and come back to me. No reply by noon so rang, got someone else, they checked my account and sure enough I'd incurred a fiver charge.

I asked them to remove it, they did, but I still can't delete the games, so I'm always in some small danger that if my missus or a mate tries playing any of the games, I'm gonna be billed. Cheeky bast4rds tbh. But Orange told me they can't remove it. They got me instructions from Sammy and rang me back... but as I explained to the lady before, these games are LOCKED into the phone.. little blue padlock symbol. I can't take them out. If anyone knows how too... pls post. it's why I asked Orange for a sim update in case they could unlock that item to remove it.

One point down for Samsung. No free game and far too easy to accidentally buy them when you already have in on the phone.

Next minor issue is that, if texting, you get interupted and you close the text app, it doesn't store it to drafts... unlike my previous Nokia's so you lose the text.

But good news on battery power. Over half and hour talk time to Orange, and it's been on for 24 hours and no sign of battery dropping even one bar. Clever little app for the desk top that shows it's memory status, battery power % etc. Shows at 85%

Negative point. If I get a text message and don't hear it, there is no visual clue that I have one waiting. My Nokia 5500 had an LCD screen that, while the back light went off, I COULD still see the message box... and all the recent Nokia's I use for work and my wife owns, have a small flashing light to warn you that you missed something. Not on this one. Point down for Sammy.

However... I dropped it today in the carpark, while carrying too much stuff, it skidded for about 3 metres, and it totally untouched. Point up.

Re: Samsung B2710 Solid Immerse: Long term review

a fortnight has been and passed with my Solid Immerse, the GT B2710.

Battery life is quite adequate, with a charge needed every 5 to 6 days with frequent texting and occassional chatting.

I'm constantly catchin the volume controls though, as they're very sensitive, on the side of the phone, and it's quite irritating,

The speakerphone is louder than my previous Nokia's and works well in noisy environments, so that's good.

But I think it needs a firmware update as it gets stuck on the text inbox shortcut sometimes, and it seems to be if I'm about to open the text when the phone does something else *ie rings, or receives another text.

The only way to clear it from the desktop is to go into menu and open the text from the folder. Irritating.

    But is it hard?

Oh yes... this is a hard mutha... I have already dropped it on concrete, and onto tiled floors. It's rugged.. there is no marks on it at all..... and the keypad is a joy to use.. rubbery, grippy and nice to text on with my thumb.

But I do struggle with Samsung texting.. it's not as user friendly (for this user anyway) as Nokia... swapping to different words or characters in the predicitve menu is a down arrow job, not a bottom corner click.. and once you do choose what you want, it is still high-lit in bold (incase yuo want to put a comma or question mark etc after it) but if you DONT... you have to right click off the bold.. again.

    slow

also, the bottom corner key used to switch from lower to upper case, goes through numbers first, so lower case, then numbers, then upper.

It means that to text fast, with capitals in the right place, means I often type a row of numbers cos I expected it to be caps next in the menu.

But most irritating is that when I type a full stop, and then space... it doesn't go to capitals immediately for the next sentence... so I have to wait a full second before starting to type again.

I now understand that my friends with Sammy's aren't being lazy in their text senstences.....

The torch is AWESOME, the compass calibrates fast and has been used today in central London when I lost my way and sense of direction and it's like nails... hard!

Re: Samsung B2710 Solid Immerse: Long term review

    9th MARCH 2011

The good, the bad and the damn right ugly.

Good... it's concrete hard, IS waterproof (sink full of washing up, red hot water... no worries)

Bad.... it's struggling with taking texts of more than 2 pages in weak signal areas and when it gets a signal blending them... I'm losing parts of long texts.

Ugly.... serious software issue: if I am reading a text when I receive another.. it locks solid. Can't scroll.. can't close.. won't power off.. have let it for one HOUR and it won't work. Onyl solution is battery out. And that's as much use as a chocolate tea pot. I often gets texts while reading another text... result.... dead phone.

And the Kies software package tells me I have the latest update flashware. So... that's it. ... gotta wait.

I'm too busy to ring Orange and complain... I have worked far to many 12 hour days where I get a text... read it... and get another during reading.. and it locks.. and another 6 or 7 hours go by before I remember my phon'e's dead.

Not impressed with this part of Samsung life. Not at all.

But it's a dream to text ON... the keys are lovely... the screen's not bad... the camera's good.....

Right now.. for life and death use .. I'd rate it. Cos you can always take a battery out and put it back in if it goes wrong...

but for daily use... slipping fast. Not my favourite.

Re: Samsung B2710 Solid Immerse: Long term review

    1st April:

two weeks ago I got fed up with the phone jamming when reading a text and receiving one at the same time. I contacted Orange, went through the issue, they read through their logs of my connection and it seemed pretty certain that I had a duff phone. They had some records of my phone going offline far too often, so it was determined to send me a replacement. Time and date booked, courier showed up and I swapped phone (keeping my battery, sim card and even the battery cover: only the phone itself came)

    and.....

    /drum roll

    Problem solved

Text can arrive while I read them and no issues occur.

    /deep breath.

But I'm missing calls now; I can have a perfect signal, and be with the phone all day. I get no phone calls. And sometimes I don't get text either. But once I send a text, I get a barrage of text arriving, and then the missed call texts arrive and then the answer phone message symbol shows.

    /sigh

I shall persevere. It's got sooo much potential and yet it's feeling ... weakened by this lot.

I rang Orange yesterday to rasie this issue and it may possibly be becaue I don't have the latest Orange and T Mobile Sim update for shared signal on their networks. I have that SIM update now and shall keep my fingers crossed.

Re: Samsung B2710 Solid Immerse: Long term review

That has something to do with cell sites and the call routing when you dont receive anything. If there are a lot of people connected to the mast it creates congestion or bottleneck and sometimes things can take time to get through. With regards to text messages there could be a problem with the sms service center on either side. The way it works is send text > service center receives it > text gets forwarded to receiving service center > then text gets sent to recipient. If there is any problem somewhere in that sequence it can hold things up.

What I would suggest is that if you dont use the internet on the phone then disable the 3G so it is connected to an analogue signal which should give a stronger steady signal. Also instead of having it on automatically search for best signal do a manual search and connection, this way the device will log onto the strongest signal and emptiest mast within a 10 mile radius and do that when you move into another area.

You do know with Orange and T Mobile now you can log onto the other networks mast at no extra cost since the merger. I am on T Mobile and this service is really handy when in a low signal area. You just have to register to use the service on your operators website.

Re: Samsung B2710 Solid Immerse: Long term review

Right.. how do I work out which is non 3G?

    GSM 900/1800
    GSM 850/1900
    UMTS 900/2100

or Auto which is what I'm on at the mo.

I DID set up email... it was rubbish and cost a small fortune to receive spam... so lets bin 3G.

Re: Samsung B2710 Solid Immerse: Long term review

    You want GSM 900/1800

1900 is the tri band signal needed for America and Canada and 2100 is your quad band for South America & Asia.

900/1800 is dual band and what Europe uses and is the standard analogue signal. UMTS will give you the 3G & HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access) speeds for net browsing.

You will still be able to send and receive photos on 2G signal and browse the net but the speed is about the same as a 56k modem! However like I said, if you dont use the net you will find that you have a better signal that doesnt drop out.

Yep, if it just has a G there its on the 2G signal which is analogue.

Should work better for you now, 3G is good but I have found that the signal can fluctuate quite a bit and if it ends up on 2 bars round my way calls sound terrible and the data doesnt work properly.

    This SOOO much better

Not missed a call, battery life seems vastly better too... still not moved from MAX charge for days.

I think I'm back in love with this phone Ferral

Plus... the camera is taking some good shots. Very good quality. Seems quite competent

Just a quick technical comment - 2G GSM (900/1800) is actually a digital (encrypted) signal. AFAIK there are no analogue mobile phone services available in the UK, they were shut down some time ago to free up that part of the RF spectrum.

Yeah you are right there Pete, it is a digital signal. However, in the trade it is still actually known as the Analogue signal when you are talking to customers, makes it easier to explain the whole 3G thing with speeds etc

Re: Samsung B2710 Solid Immerse: Long term review

Right.. after a week of good phone use.. it went of the Fritz again in a big way.. every time I got a text and started to read it, it locked up if any other phone activity went on, and that seemed now to also include updating the text message i was reading to a a second page of text..

Wed night phone call to Orange, where someone guided me through the totally unecesary act of factory restting my phone, promised he'd call me on the Thursday evening at 6pm after 24 hours of use.

    He didn't.

On Fri morning, on my birthday (receiving birthday wish's from mates and locking my phone up every 3 minutes...) after having removed the battery 3 times to get it to work I rang Orange, and explained that I was fed up.

Nice lady, very sorry I was having grief, security questions "What's your date of birth please....?"

    TODAY//// ITS TODAY!!!!!

agreed to send me a new phone as the last two have been no good.

Glad she did, and it arvied today (Sat) because yesterday afternoon it decided to totally muller a full battery in 4 hours! I'd normally get 5 days.. and it killed it in an evening. No idea why,.....

but I'm on phone No 3 now.

Fingers crossed. I SO want it to be good cos the potential is great... just reality letting it down!

    24th April

Have had it over a week now.. on the same charge

still 1/4 to go as well

but it HAs still locked up, twice. Both times when texting and NEITHER time when I was receiving as well as texting.. both times were when I used the T9 dictionary, and scrolled down through options... the box was blank.. and then the phone seizes.

    battery off twice.

Re: Samsung B2710 Solid Immerse: Long term review

    27th June

    Still suffering with lock ups.

Have got new SIM to replace current one, but now can't get the Samsung Kies software to connect. Having googled that, I'm not alone.

So.. once I do get in attached, I can back up my sim and swap it over.

Sillyness, ulimited sillyness. Nokia PC suite just works... this.. just doesn't
