Orange Sanfransisco whats it like ?

I'm eying one of these up at the moment, as the LG GT540 I bought cheap is about as much use a chocolate fire guard.

Especially concerned about the touch screen on it, and how responsive it is. I know it's not going to be like using an iphone but would be nice if it was a bit more useable than the one I have at the moment.

Re: Orange Sanfransisco whats it like ?

I like my one, with froyo and some tweaks installed its pretty good.
    Downsides are
    Camera.
No adobe flash support unless you use a bowser like syfire.
CPU is a bit lame for games (fine for other uses).
    Battery could be better.

    Plus points
    Best value out there.
    Screen is very good.
Very active community (I mainly use Modaco).
    Easy unlock
Probably worth more than you paid if you get fedup with it (unlock and instal a froyo ROM, sell on ebay)

you have only managed to go and buy a resistive screened phone

the capacitive on the San Fran will be in the iPhone/Galaxy S/Desire ballpark

Re: Orange Sanfransisco whats it like ?

I've been using mine since December, and overall - especially for the price, you really can't go wrong.

I'll say thanks again for the members on this forum to giving a heads up on it late last year (I think that was Rave).

Some more feed back (but will echo above):-

    PRICE!!!

Easy to unlock / tweak etc

Screen is good, like really good (again for the price point) Not sure if you'll find an AMOLED version now? But even a TFT version, on this phone isn't bad.

A good set of features, that you might associate with higher priced phones

Battery life is hit and miss - I used to think it was certain custom ROMS that used to effect battery life - but I think the battery gauge is very misleading / needs calibrating. When I charge my phone for longer, even after it's 100% - I get waay more battery life overall.

I wouldn't try and play much more than angry birds or a few puzzle games.

    No Flash in the browser.

Build quality is a little crap.

Me being silly & curious, I also opened up my phone without much foresight, to clean a crap load of dust and fibre that had got under the screen plate. After I put it back together I has issues with the touch screen... weird response, which lead to it completely stop working. Was an issue with the digitizer, I found one on ebay for 15 quid and replaced it - was back in business.

Camera is total sh*t - so much so, just imagine this phone without a camera, and it is better. You might get something passable in good light outdoors, other than that no.

You can always sell it for a decent price later, providing it's in good condition.

Re: Orange Sanfransisco whats it like ?

There are now some blade specific accesories out there. Most important one for me is a spare battery, but cases and screen protectors are also available. Main place to get them seems to be ebay.

It's REALLY good. We have 2 San Fran's in the house, and if I didn't have a HTC Desire I would have a San Fran. Amazing phone for the price.

Be warned, the camera is ****e though.

Re: Orange Sanfransisco whats it like ?

Yes it seems everyone is complaining about the camera, me and the old man are off out tomorrow to have a look round at some phones, although I may keep going with my E71 for a while longer (thats my backup phone)

Tesco Extra are selling the San Francisco for £94.99 inc £10 top up which seems a pretty good buy to me

don't sounds so apologetic, its good that you like the android OS enough to stick with it. Its not supposed to be the be all and and all of phones, its very budget minded and we all prefer I7s to I3s right?

a snapdragon will blow your socks off in comparison but with price factored in the sanfran is god.

Re: Orange Sanfransisco whats it like ?

I have to say the Desire HD is a much much better phone than the Orange SF, although the SF is a decent phone the HD is amazing. Battery life seems to be 3 to 4 times what I was getting out of the Orange phone and the performance from the phone it self is also light years ahead. I will use my SF when I go away for work, 3rd world countries are not the best place to take a nice expensive smart phone.

Re: Orange Sanfransisco whats it like ?

As noted, camera's not the best, I use Vignette to handle photos, which seems to help. Battery life is shorter than I'd like. Aside from that, a LOT of phone for not much cash. Great screen (even the TFT version which I have is good), good performance, easy (free) unlock, easy availability of FroYo ROMs, all-in-all, I'm very happy. And I think the build quality's fine.

Re: Orange Sanfransisco whats it like ?

I find that using the 3G for data absolutely kills the battery. Angry birds also seems to lag horrifically for me on the larger maps. As everyone else has said the camera is also pretty dire (I used it to take some pictures in my MITX Gaming Build thread if you wanted some evidence).

I'm running a modded version of 2.2 and most other things seem fine, screen is great quality and overall speed for general usage is pretty decent.
