iPad - what SIMs can it take?

I'm going to be leasing an iPad 2 for business use. Due to the leasing company being annoying I'm going to be going for a 3G one so I was looking into the option of getting a data SIM to use with it. I'm looking at bog standard data contracts of which I can one from 3 for only a fiver a month which will do the job. 3 state the SIM is for "3G phones only". Are there any issues in using data packages for phones with the iPad?

BTW I know that the iPad uses micro SIMs. If I go for this setup then I'll be purchasing a cutter to cut the SIM to size. So this shouldn't be an issue!

Dont know what 3 is like now but they used to charge you extra for GPRS if there wasnt a 3G signal. Vodafone give you GPRS coverage within your data allowance.

True, but seeing as the iPad has 3G support that is irrelevant. It is only realy an issue for people who try to put 3 SIM cards in really old or cheap phones. Anything mid to high end these days has 3G support.

So what you're saying is that seeing as the iPad is a 3G device, any 3G mobile phone SIM will work with it once it's cut to size?

I'm not asking specifically about 3 but in general.

Go to 3 website and have a look at their price plans for iPad... Ridiculously cheap.

iPad takes normal full fat SIM cards just like any mobile phone.

Re: iPad - what SIMs can it take?

Why bother replying if you are going to provide the chap with bogus or simply wrong info...

    - The chap was clearly looking to find out if he can use ANY data only deal
    - The iPad does NOT take normal size sims and does require the micro-sim or a normal sim cut to size

It might be looking in to whether the SIM from one of the 5GB / £15.99 (or 15GB for £20.99/24mo) Mobile internet deals from 3 would work in an iPad.

Really I see no reason why a standard SIM wouldn't work in the iPad... Seems a huge con if you have to buy an ipad specific deal.

This website lists all the sim only deals from various providers..

Re: iPad - what SIMs can it take?

I have had a T-mobile data card (3G USB dongle) for 3 or 4 years. When I asked T-mobile, they sent me out a microsim version for £10. Total cost is about £5/month.

It will work with any SIM which is 3G enabled.
