If so, what phone do you think is the best overall?
Thanks.

Not the same as owned but part of my job is to evaluate phones for my business and determine which is the most suitable for certain users.
At the moment, we are using nokia 3300's as a standard phone, HTC Desires for engineers, support technicians and Iphone 4's for management and anyone else who is set to receive mobile email.
Which is best is a hard thing to save but all of them have their pros and cons.
Nokia
Pro -Great battery life and a simple phone for anyone to use. Pretty sturdy as well.
Con - No mobile email, On internet access (that we deem internet access), poor image
Desire
Pros - Great 'techy' phone. Our IT support engineers love them as apps can be developed in house by our linux guy, good hotspot accress for laptop dial in and pretty cheap for the company to buy from my point of view.
Con - Battery life leaves a lot to be desired (), not that easy for a standard user to pick up and use without a little training from our IT department, Hard to secure in terms of what is downloaded and how the phone is used.
Iphone 4
Pro - Pick up and use simplicity. Good style and everyone seems to want one (is that a pro?). Lots of apps available.
Con - Cost (About £100 more to us than the desire and £20 more per month for Iphone Data bundle through our mobile contract). Hard to control (though has more tools for this than the desire) but seem to be quite fragile as we have had a number break on us.
Personally, I tested the iphone 4 and while it was a nice phone to use, it didn't do everything I needed and so, got given to one of our execs to test while I tested the desire. Both are very good phones but aimed at different markets I think.
Anyway, after all that, I have a HD7 as my work phone now. Seems to be pretty decent but again, lacking in the more techy things.

how poor is the battery life on the HTC?

My HTC Desire lasts around a day, a day and a half. That's usually with mid-high brightness, a good 10 hours (usual) of WiFi use, and maybe a little bit of 3g use too. I turn off WiFi and 3g when I am not using them.

I can get about a day and a half (more like 40 hours) out of my desire without it complaining about the battery. That's with Exchange sync and other background data tasks, wifi all the time and connected when at work or at home. 50% screen brightness.
If I'm reading news or playing games a lot (anything with the screen on for a long period of time) the battery only lasts until I get home, so about 10 hours.

I think it mostly comes down to personal choice and what you see yourself using it for. If you are a casual user wanting lots of games and fart apps, and don't mind using iTunes to sync it all then an iPhone is quite a capable phone.
If however you are one of the more techy crowd (which if you are on these forums is a high likelihood) then Personally I would go for an Android based phone. They are much easier to customise and do with as you will. There is still a huge number of apps (and an increasing number of very high quality games). But without so much of the glitz of an iPhone.
Personally I have a standard HTC Desire and love it to bits, despite having to have it repaired due to a known 3G overheating issue. My next phone will very likely be another HTC, or possibly one of the new Motorola Atrix, depending what's around at the end of the month when my upgrade is due.

I went with a Desire HD in the end, I needed a phone and my contract was up so it was the best I on the market at the moment.

I see you purchased, but I do own both iPhone 4 and Desire. The Desire is being sold to a mate as its now at the price point where I would change and still get enough from selling/recycling it for money to put towards a new phone. I have had it since May last year so its not done bad at all.
As for which is best ... Well ... They both have their strengths and weaknesses, which supplement each other very well. The Desire has the better OS IMO in that its more flexible and allows you to do nearly anything. Couple that with excellent community support and different community ROMS you are laughing. I'll give a simple example. I want to share a YouTube clip on Twitter. On the Desire it share, and I can then share to ANY Twitter app I have installed, stock or from the marketplace. My link is automatically shorted and done. iOS, share I can email. Wow. Not even send as a message. iOS has major shortcomings in that department.
Hardware wise, the iPhone 4 wins. Camera, screen and feel. Hands down. Plus the App Store for Apple is pretty comprehensive as well, although Android is catching up.
I used to use the Desire as my main phone, now I'm selling it, its in its box and the iPhone is my main phone.
Not sure what to replace the Desire with though. It has been a very surprising bit of kit for me.
Sorry to hijack a bit, but did anyone see the new OFFICIAL iPhone 4 white edition released?

It has a new small opening slit above ear receiver speaker thing. Does anyone know what that's for?
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2 GB DDR2, 500GB SATA-II 7200RPM, nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512mb, BenQ E2200 HD, BenQ G2412HD, Logitech S510 Wireless set, Creative GigaWorks T3 Speakers.

Out of those two, the iPhone 4 by a mile. The Desire HD is ok but it has a lot of little flaws that the iPhone doesn't suffer from to the same extent.
I have both.
You made a mistake![]()
to buy a phone at the moment the Samsung Galaxy S II would be the best choice for best screen/battery life and functionality however the sony ericsson xperia arc is looking right up to being as good as that with its 4.3 inch screen which is very sharp, mabye not as sharp as the iphone 4 but still very good. one step below that is probably the htc desire S with a 3.7 inch s-lcd screen and moderately good battery life due to its 1450mAh battery. on a budget the Desire S is really the way to go and it is a upgrade in terms of specs from the desire HD which hasnt got the best battery!

yeah HTC Desire is was one of the good phone to buy in 2months before, Now you can have maximum choice to buy mobile phones. Samsung Galaxy S2 is also good phone with
1.2Ghz processor that it incorporates. Not only is this one of the largest available in a mobile handset, but it also is a dual core unit, enabling effortless multi tasking and generally quicker response in all areas. The processor is joined by a hefty 1Ghz of RAM and 16GB of internal storage capacity, ideal for storing all manner of material including multiple audio files or snaps and footage captured by the phone itself. The camera is a cut above the standard found on most smartphones, and offers a high quality 8 mega pixel image. The camera is accompanied by an LED flash to make shots in poor lighting much more effective. Video footage is also great, with the S2 being one of only a handful of models able to capture 1080P, the highest resolution HD footage possible.
