new phone, new contract.. how to switch?

My dad is getting a new phone shortly (contract almost at the point where 30 days notice is needed), hes trying to look for a phone and i think hes looking at the desire HD as its only £16.6p/m for 300mins/unlimited text/500mb internet on Orange, cant find any other phone that comes near it in price (£20 is his absolute max) as all the dualcore phones seem to be £27+!

Im a bit off the whole canceling contract and porting number procedure, from what i recall you ask for a Pac code and then just give it to the new provider and then the previous one will count that as a cancellation but the one thing im thinking about is the 30days notice, pac codes last 30 days so do you have to request one exactly 1 month before and then purchase a phone during that period, as the way i see it youd be loosing a bit of money during the transfer, your paying for 2 contracts at somepoint and you cant wait till the current one expires as the pac then expires and you loose the number!

So can someone explain to me how the PAC code works and the best way to go about it? Do they need to have the pac code used (i.e given to new network) 30days prior to contract end or is it excluded from the minimum notification period, things like that .

Any helps appreciated as i cant seem to find USEFUL information on the web, also phone suggestions are good!.

Re: new phone, new contract.. how to switch?

I don't see why the cancellation of the contract and the PAC code have to be simultaneous. Surely you could inform the firm that you wish to cancel the contract in 30 days' time, but you do not need the PAC code for a short while, then obtain the PAC code a fortnight later?

Unless it's changed in the last couple of years ...

When you ask for the PAC code your original contract stays live. If you use the code with your new provider within 30 days, that triggers the end of your original contract. So you need to time it so the notice period expires at the point you use the PAC, or earlier.

If you don't use the PAC with 30 days your original contract continues and the PAC expires.

And do you have a link for that deal? That seems pretty good for a £400 phone

Re: new phone, new contract.. how to switch?

so it doesnt require a minimum 30days use? I.e the pac could be used on the last day of the original contract and it would end just as if you asked them to cancel it (not a pac code) 29days before hand?

If so excellent! Em the deal is at dial a phone, http://www.dialaphone.co.uk/phone/HT...D/HP_Panel_P2/
Its £18.75 but you get £50 quidco (they paid this last time ) and so works out £16.66 or something, it does however use cashback BUT dial a phone has to be the best place for it (in my experience), extremely easy to use as their website has a calendar for times of when to do the things and you get 60 days for each one to do it, plenty of time and all of my cashbacks arrived within a week of claiming.

I think i may sidestep to that just to make it cheaper than my £21 p/m for my HD2 from virgin, a steal back in the day but it seems most phones now are only on par with the beast! And the dual core/3d phones are way to much (stupid iphone prices lol)

Yes, though personally I'd wait until the day after the earliest point the contract can end, just to be certain.

Those are some pretty good deals. I calculate the 24 month Dolphin with 6 months free is going to be a total of £450 over 2 years if you remember to cash in the redemptions. Ebuyer are usually pretty cheap for sim free phones and they're charging £416 for it, so if the bundled minutes and browsing is all your dad needs, he's basically getting 2 years of phone use for about £30 plus any special rate call costs.

The only downside I can see is that the thing is the size and weight of a brick, albeit a gorgeous, enviable, lovely to use and look at brick

I'd definitely suggest your dad pops round to a shop and tries it for size if he hasn't done so already.

Re: new phone, new contract.. how to switch?

You can ask them to set a date for the port when you hand over the PAC code. It normally takes just a few days now instead of a full 7 days.

Once the number ports over it terminates the contract of your origional provider. You wont be paying for more than one contract either as the final month you dont pay line rental when you give your 30 days notice. When you first setup the contract you pay a month in advance on your line rental and a month behind on your calls. So all you would have to pay on the contract you are terminating is any usage outside of your allowances.

Hope this info helps. I used to work for T Mobile, Vodafone and O2 so know how this stuff works. Be careful if your dad is on 3, dont let them get into talking you round. Literally be straight to the point requesting your PAC from them and once they confirm you can have it finish the call pretty quickly, they have a pretty aggressive approach with their retention team and have been known to resign people without them knowing.

Re: new phone, new contract.. how to switch?

sorry for late reply, had to do some overtime lol.

Thankyou so much for the info guys, Ferral i totally forgot about that if im honest! My dad isnt on 3 anymore, they were great (am i the only one who thinks this?) but he got a better deal at O2 however it seems O2 is now crap in terms of deals and well three might be beating the orange offer so he may go with them.

On another note, i dropped(more like thrown ) my HD2 on my stone slabs in a rush and it cracked the top right of the screen so i guess its made the decision for me, new contract!

So what phones would you guys recommend? Im fine with pretty much any 4.3" screen as its a good size, 4" is minimum really and it needs to offer something better than a 1ghz snapdragon as all the phone seem to use the same hardware as mine now , the galaxy S2 is way overpriced (£30!) and my budget is really around £20, if its something amazing then ill pay £25 p/m. I have managed to find the LG Optimus 2x for £18.75 p/m (including quidco) which offers the same tarrif as the orange one mentioned (300mins/unlimited text/500mb data/unlimited emails), it seems the only real issue is that the original software was slightly laggy/buggy and that theres a odd hardware issue and that its a luck of the draw if you have a good or bad one(im not fussed if i need to ask for a replacement) and over at XDA theres a lot of support, dare i say almost as much as the mighty HD2 and it seems that the custom roms are very fast and battery life is acceptable. Anything else im missing or should i aim to purchase that next month?

Re: new phone, new contract.. how to switch?

sorry for the double post but this is kinda on topic.

My dads decided to wait for a few months now as he doesnt like the hd anymore, seems to want to get the SGS2 now but waiting for price to come down.

I went in phones4u, got a great deal on the lg optimus 2x and so took it but my contracts not ending until end of july, my dad is going to use the remainder of my virgin contract while he waits as it saves him going sim only. I was wonder if i could later then port my number over to my newer contract in 2 months later? I dont know if its something i can only do within a certain time frame of joining a new contract/nextwork?

Some of the networks will allow you to port over anytime, I know O2 do. Vodafone you used to have the PAC when you connect and couldnt give it afterwards. Best bet is give the network you are connected to now a quick call to find out.
