    Phone Upgrade time

Right, I've currently got an HTC Desire which has been unbranded, but it's getting a bit dull, which phone should I go for next. Has to be android. My actual contract's not up for a couple of months but I can upgrade on Voda now...

I'm looking at keeping the tariff i've got, or as close to it as possible, which is £35.75 for 300 mins, 3000 text and 1024mb data. I would also like to stick with an 18month contract. Where's the best place to go?

I've already been offered the SGSII for £33 a month with £10 for the phone, but that's on a 24month contract.

Is it worth waiting for the next HTC?

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

Personally I'd wait for the next HTC - possibly the EVO3D as there are a lot of features of Sense UI that you may miss. If you absolutely have to have something ASAP then either the SGS2 or HTC Sensation are good phones. Personally I have the Motorola Atrix which I think is massively overlooked by most people but I believe is only available from Orange at the moment.

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

Yeah, probably don't need anything now, just a bit bored with the current handset. Definitely not going for a 24 month contract then...
I think I will wait until the contract has properly finished - I can shop around then...

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

There are quite a few new phones on the horizon which will no doubt blow whatever trash Apple announces next month out of the water. If you can hold out until September / October you might even get the first crop of Quad-Core phones.

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

    Hmm, good point.
Has anyone used Tesco Mobile or Virgin mobile - are they any good? I know someone that works at Tesco so might be able to get a deal there. I know TM piggy back on O2 and VM on EE (Orange/T-Mob) but I had a blackberry on T-Mobile which had pretty terrible reception...

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

I've been PAYG on both Virgin and Tesco mobile years ago, and didn't have any problems with either of them. That said, I didn't have much to do with them either beyond making top ups!

Not sure about T-Mobile's reception - it always used to be pretty poor, but the free roaming onto Orange's signal has to help. I've been on Orange, 3 and Vodafone most recently, and they all have their foibles. Voda have just offered me a free Desire Z upgrade on my existing tarrif, so I'll be ringing up for my PAC code soon to see how cheap I can get it if I threaten to leave

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

I know you will probably not want to hear this but the HTC Desire S feels great in the hand. They have made the unit width slightly slimmer than the original. It feels like a phone should. Best thing is you won't need to be tied down 18-24months either. You could sell your Desire which are doing good trade on ebay and pay the difference for it which wouldn't be much.

I'm still thinking what is the point of dual processor phones / 3d? are their clear advantages in the battery department...

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

I think the idea is that rather than maxing out one core, dual core phone spread the load over both cores, meaning less drain. Whether that happens in reality, I don't know.

So, where's the best place to get a SIM-free phone then?

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

I guess I'd be looking at initial cost + monthly fee for rolling sim-only being less than the £35.75 a month i'm currently paying. I guess £450 should do it, as long as I can get a SIM only deal for £10 a month that does what I want.

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

3 offer 100 minutes, tons of texts and 1GB of internet for £10, on a rolling 30 day contract.

It's a bit light on minutes, but heavy on internet, so it depends on your usage really. It fits mine perfectly, and is what I'll be going for if voda don't make me a good offer when I ring for my PAC, but obviously YMMV.

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

Your usage sounds pretty similar to mine, not much talking, some texting and lots of internet. Not so sure about 3 though. Our house is in a bit of a dead spot for signals, so anything that's slightly weak is a no-no...

    Re: Phone Upgrade time

T-Mobile are doing Unlimited Internet (no fair use) for contracts on £25 a month for 24 months.

e.g. SGS2 can be had for £100 or HTC Sensation for £150 with 300 minutes, 300 texts with a fexi-booster (e.g. unlimited texts)

Hmm, I had a work Blackberry on T-Mobile and the reception was shocking at my house. Had to turn Wifi on to get data through... Still, it might have improved since the merger...

My friend has a Samsung Galaxy S2 and is really liking it. Android has really good features like rooting, etc and the camera on the SAMSUNG Galaxy S2 is quite impressive for a phone (1080p video recording!). The screen is really good too

That's about the long and short. My average use over the last 6 months is 20 minutes, 25 texts, 350MB data. My highest usage is about 50 minutes.

So here's a wildcard for you: TalkMobile - car phone ware house's own network. Piggybacks on voda, so the same signal you're currently enjoying. They're doing a 24month contract with 200 minutes, 200 texts, 1GB data, for £12 a month: http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/pay...ff-deals/T124N.

You need to pay a bit up front for decent phones - e.g. £249.99 for the LG Optimus 2X - but given that the plan will cover your usage and only cost £288 for the 24 months, it might be worth it in the long term...
