Motorola Defy, HTC Desire Z, or ?????

So, I'm due for an upgrade / change of contract shortly. I use a handful of texts & minutes each month, plus a decent amount of data. If anything is going to increase, it'll be the data, rather than the minutes or texts.

I'm currently on voda, £25 a month, for 100 mins, 500 texts, 500MB, with an HTC Magic. The options I've looked at so far:
    1) Stick with Voda, do a straight upgrade. I can get the Desire Z (the Desire with a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard ) on my current tarif with a new 18 months contract - just walk into any voda store, done and dusted. Total cost, £450 over 18 months.

    2) Switch to Talk Mobile. I can get 200 minutes, 200 texts, 1GB for £12 a month. I'll then need to pay up front to get a half decent mobile - I'm looking at the Moto Defy for £159.99. Total cost £447.99 over 24 months.

    3) Go SIM Only and buy an unlocked handset. I can get 100 minutes, 3000 texts, 1GB with 3 for £10 on a one month contract. So that'd be either £180 over 18 months, giving me £270 to spend on a handset similar / equivalent to a Desire Z, or £240 over 24 months giving my £207 to spend on a handset similar / equivalent to a Moto Defy. But it would also give me the choice of pretty much any 3G handset.

    4) Ring Voda, ask for my PAC code, and see how good a deal they offer me

What I could do with from the Hexus collective is; suggestions on handsets if I take option 3, suggestions on other contract options at a similar total cost, and pointers if I've missed any other obvious options in addition to the above...

See what retention deal you can get. I have a Defy myself.

Should probably have made it clear: I will be ringing up to see what retention deal I get regardless

I'd like to know what my plan is if I don't like what they offer me though!

Now, is it just me, or is this Expansys deal on the Acer Liquid E too good to be true? Snapdragon chipset, 800x480 capacitative multi-touch, 512MB RAM... Surely it's got to cost more than £150 sim free....?

A Defy would be my choice if i could afford one. I am on Giffgaff which is an awesome sim.

I looked at GiffGaff but they're about to drop their unlimited data to a very restrictive / expensive daily rate which won't suit my purposes (I use about 400MB of data most months with daily usage varying between 5MB and 50MB....)

That is only being dropped if you buy credit only. Doesn't apply to Goodybags.

Re: Motorola Defy, HTC Desire Z, or ?????

I just jumped ship from giffgaff to 3, and upgraded to a samsung g s2. ended up on a £30 month contract but got £150 cashback with quidco. Main reason for going with 3 is the reception at work, but generally the data coverage is fantastic. Typing this in a tent, a good couple of miles from any large towns, and getting good data speeds. The sgs2 is also very good.

Cat did you handset experience the speaker problem that made it's way on tech blogs? that was only reason I never went for one in the end initially.

I got the Desire Z its super sweet but you're better off with something with a faster processor
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2 GB DDR2, 500GB SATA-II 7200RPM, nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512mb, BenQ E2200 HD, BenQ G2412HD, Logitech S510 Wireless set, Creative GigaWorks T3 Speakers.

Re: Motorola Defy, HTC Desire Z, or ?????

OK, I rang vodafone retentions, and they offered me.... nothing. In fact, they told me that the upgrade option I was offered in store was wrong! Utterly useless.

So, I'm switching provider as well. What are the best deals out there to get an android phone of similar spec to the desire, and potentially with a physical keyboard? Max monthly cost £25, must have a minimum of 100minutes and 500MB data, 1GB data is preferred.

Ask for your code and see if they will ring you up the next day. TBH,the retention deals T-Mobile offered me were better for an 18 month contract and I was on a one month repeating SIM only contract too.

Re: Motorola Defy, HTC Desire Z, or ?????

If you are doing redemption deals you can get some very nice phones free for between £15 to £25 a month for an 18 month contract. If you don't want to do a redemption deal you will need to balance handset cost and contract price. Going onto a £30 a month 18 month contract with a free phone may end up better value than going for a cheaper contract and having to pay for the phone.

    Edit!!

This phone looks decent for the price:

Re: Motorola Defy, HTC Desire Z, or ?????

Interesting idea CAT, but I'm kinda hooked on Android now

T-Mobile do the Defy free @ £20/month, but I can get it on a £10/month contract for £150. That's very similar to what I can get from talkmobile for the same phone. I can get sim only from 3 for £10/month and pick up an Acer Liquid Metal for £200 sim-free. Or I can get the Desire Z that I like so much on vodafone for £25/month over 18 months (or sim free for £260).

    Decisions decisions...
