    Retentions be retainin'

Paying £30 a month for a bunch of bull**** from Orange, including 750MB of data. Contract ends tomorrow, so I rang up Orange to tell them to give me my number & feck off, so I can switch to another network with unlimited data. At least short term until the handset I want is out.

Ended the call with £15 a month, no minimum contract term, unlimited SMS, 500 minutes, and 1G of data.

I guess the retentions department did what it says on the tin, then .... and you got a great deal and a big smile.

It just makes me think .... if they'll do that rather than lose you, weren't they rather ripping you off before?

To be fair, previously I expect he was paying for a phone, while now he isn't... so Orange may well be getting more from him than they were previously.

Funny, I called up to cancel my Orange contract saying I was going to giffgaff £15, and they offered me nothing.

I too was on a £30 contract and frequently went over that... Oh well, their loss!

I left Voda a few months back and they had a good go. One word and they almost hung up on me instantly: GiffGaff

Mobile companies are a funny bunch; sometimes they'll thrown deals at you when your contract ends, other times they'll just offer you the standard discount from the website or thank you for time as a loyal customer.

    Re: Retentions be retainin'

They've probably realised so many people know about retentions now that they've got to let some people go and focus on attracting new custom.

Sky used to have a retentions dept and did all sorts of deals and then just closed the whole thing down and ended it... presumably because they have an adequately unique product that they don't need to start giving it away for nothing to prevent people from going elsewhere.

Was in the O2 store today.

O2's existing customer bonus is that they'll graciously allow you to upgrade your phone (i.e. get a new contract from scratch) up to 30 days before your current one expires. No discount or anything, just the "early" upgrade.

In which case, graciously decline and check for the best deal on the open market.

I guess question 1) is whether you want a new phone or are happy with the one you've got? If the latter, then there certainly were some good service-only deals last time I looked. Then again, that was a few months back. But, self-evidently, if you want/need a new phone, it'll cost in the contract price, one way or another. Perhaps the market is evolving away from trying to build in free phones, and generous retention deals, because too many people (i.e. just about everyone) is upgrading as soon as the minimum period expires, and if the profitability comes from expected customer inertia and it isn't happening, the deals will change.

I don't know what they offered you, but the gf gained a heck of a lot by going from o2 to GiffGaff (plus we can now talk and text for free).

I did a few calculations, and for almost every phone she wanted, it was better to buy the sim free version handset (higher outlay, granted) and put a GiffGaff sim in it.

Even people I know without a GCSE in Maths compare the deals across networks, it's not exactly difficult.

    Re: Retentions be retainin'

I was amazed at how few companies were prepared to even consider cutting my a deal. I got my Optimus 2x for £180 up front, then a 12 month, £20 contract, so £420 over the year. I went into a 3 shop before getting it and the bloke basically just said "there's no way we can offer you anything remotely like as good value".

So, compared to the upgrade deal Voda offered me (without any attempt at retention, remember), I get a shorter contract, a lower monthly outlay, twice as much everything per month, and not only a better, but also an unlocked handset for when I want to change network in 12 months time (I don't think my o2x will be obsolete in 12 months... ). Bargain

I'm with 3, and i upgraded both my contract, and my wife's last month.

    iPhone 4 (no upfront cost)
    2000 mins
    5000 texts
    2000 3 to 3 mins
    Unlimited data

£20 per month for 24 months

So i got one for me and the wife. I get a great signal with it, and I havent found a deal anywhere that even comes close.
