Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

Thing is, I really like the phone. Response is great, sound quality over headphones is fantastic (to my non-audiophile ear, anyway), mobile data seems fast (faster than my Magic, despite being on the same network), and pretty much everything just *works* how I want it to - the only problem seems to be with the battery indication (and even that worked fine for a little while). And because CPW do it quite cheap, anything I got as a replacement would feel like a downgrade.

I reckon I'm going to try a custom rom, see if that solves the problem. I've started to find a few little niggles about the LG modifications to the vanilla programs (like you can't clear the current playlist in Music - I mean, whut?) that I'm not sure I can live with - time for a deep breath and a big rom-hunting session

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

two options jim, custom rom or ask for replacement unit/battery. I remember a few people having a serious issue with the battery life but it was all down to a dodgy battery batch that lg then replaced, is your unit getting very hot at all?

As much as i love this phone i am serious in saying it is the HTC HD2 of 2011, excellent phone however i felt the "stock" experience was bad (hd2 was good however... just much better with custom roms), for me the launcher was laggy as mad on the o2x and the only solid thing was the app launcher as that was incredibly fast/reliable, at the time i did find it alright but after custom roms.... its laughable , i did go back to it at one point while waiting for something and honestly i just turned it off and waiting .

I know what you mean on the price front, cpw here is useless though and said it was recalled etc (same bull**** when i tried to buy the htc hd2 when it was released, they're always pushing iphone to me its annoying), got mine for £17 p/m 300mins/unlimi text/500mb data on orange via phones4u so to even think of paying £20+ for say the sensation/sgs2 isn't for me, i find this phone better personally lol.

In regards to roms if you do go that route then look at this mate : http://android.modaco.com/topic/3363...nilla-edition/

thats pauls standard/reliable build, the current beta/alpha gingerbread version is : http://android.modaco.com/topic/3437...custom-kernel/

If you pay something like £10 you get adfree year long subscription and access to pauls kitchen which basically allows you customise the rom, e.g. you can remove all lg stock stuff and add stock google just so its easier to overwrite with your own (like a launcher from market place, try adw launcher its excellent)

or there is the cm7 rom over xda : http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1058254

Another issue with the cm7 is ive just read that the fm radio doesnt work either (so a2dp and radio, rest works well). Wont suggest any others really as these are the main ones, the others are people taking these roms and making it suite their needs more really.

Make sure you read as much as possible in how to actually flash your phone, you dont want to brick it! Better safe than sorry , if you do actually use custom roms and get stuck on the process just pm me and ill try and help you through it .

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

Cheers The battery has occasionally got warmish, I've got curvefish batterylife widget which reports the battery temperatures so I'll keep an eye on that. Presumably if there was a confirmed dodgy batch of batteries there should be a way to check the serial number and see if mine was one of them? I'll have a google for that tomorrow.

Today, however, it's behaved impeccably, and after only turning on data / 3g when I needed I've still got 38% battery more than 24 hours since I last unplugged. I'll give it a few more days to settle down then I'll start ;looking at custom roms: I had a good look at modaco last night and was impressed with the kitchen concept: I quite like the idea of a completely stripped down rom with just the minimal stock google apps so I may have to shell out for a subscription. Might give the vanilla rom a shot first though.

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

yeah i found the £10 or whatever it was to be entirely reasonable .

Its not confirmed as a dodgy batch etc, just that alot of members at xda replaced theirs through lg and it was flawless after (iirc, i am 99% sure it was battery lol). They do get warm but we all find warm to be different, lets say very close to hot? Mine only gets quite warm after, being on charged/blueooth streaming music/wifi and possibly gps for an hour in total .

Most of the terrible battery drain is lg stuff though, the clock/weather widget as good as it is uses a chunk of resources and drains it loads

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

Remember of course that your phone may be having issues with the battery as you've only just got it. For the first week or two, it will be bad as your battery has gone through a few charging cycles yet, and the info in your phones batterystats.bin will be off. Just using the phone will improve it's battery charge as it build up better info into the batterystats.bin over that time.

^^ That's what i've always read and been told anyway.

Then once you've been using it a couple weeks or so, you can always try re-calibrating the battery to try an improve it even more.

A video explanation of the process can be found here http://hemorrdroids.net/abc-android-...y-calibration/

The video it is a little old now though and there is an easier way to delete the batterystats.bin file using this app http://www.appbrain.com/app/battery-...erycalibration

Just like mentioned in the video though you will need to have your phone rooted in order to do the calibration. I personally use Universal Androot for my San Francisco, but have no idea if it'll work with your LG. You'd need to root the phone to install the custom rom no doubt anyway, so i'm sure Hicks12 can probably point you to a good way to root your LG. Remember though, rooting may void your warranty, I know with Universal Androot you can unroot the phone if you like but whether or not you'd get away with unrooting and deleting the root app before sending it back i couldn't tell you. So it's a call you'd have to make for yourself. It's probably best that you leave the calibration until after you see if the phones battery life settles down a bit after a couple weeks of use, or double check you didn't get a battery from a duff batch. Then if you're happy with the phone and keep it, do the calibration after you've put on a custom rom.

Sounds like your battery life is getting better now, but hopefully some of this may be of use to you.

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

I rooted my LG GT540, and it stopped working a couple of weeks later.

Sent it back to Carphone Warehouse (without doing anything else to the phone) and they flashed the latest LG rom and sent it back to me, not even a comment about the custom ROM I had installed or anything.

I would be very surprised if I didn't void the warranty, but they honoured it anyway.

Rooted Samsung Galaxy S II and I probably get two days out of it with light to moderate use (two hours music per day, a few texts, about 45 minutes of web browsing per day and half an hour on a call). Certain games drain it very fast though.

Yeah, I like the fact that it would let me keep those few bits of LG goodness that I really like (the wifi / gps / etc control bar in the notifications pull down is just fantastic, IMNSHO). My issue is I'd probably only use the kitchen once, so really the question is am I willing to pay that for a single customised OS image...!

I've pulled most of the standard LG widgets off the homepages and that seems to have helped, but I noticed a lot of them are still "running" - something else that's pushing me closer to a new rom.

Yeah, I'd picked up a few things online talking about battery cycles and stuff, along with a couple of people saying "that's a myth, modern batteries like being charged as often as possible", and without doing any in depth research myself I', not sure who to trust. So far I've only had one day of "problems", though, so for now I'm happy to put it down to a transitory glitch and just monitor the situation.

That's good to know. I also need to check my phone insurance policy and see if it had any specific exclusions for messing with the phone's software: I don't think it has from memory, in which case I'd probably be covered under the "accidental damage" clause anyway

    EDIT:

I see there's a Gingerbread alpha available on MoDaCo for the o2x. Is there any good reason I should go for a GB alpha rather than an FR stable? Any fantastic new features? And before anyone asks, yes, I am far too lazybusy to google it for myself...

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

ive used the custom kitchen about 10 times , if you want me to make up a rom then thats not a problem as thats generally what people send over to xda but to their own needs.

I honestly havent got round to trying the GB rom, been to busy and have actually needed my phone to be solid during this time (not that the beta gb wont be solid). Its got GB features, not that much more.... better battery monitor built in like you can get proper graph readings, small changes here and there.

Cm7 rom is gb also, but id personally go for the fr19, if your new to custom roms then picking a new (bleeding edge essentially) rom then your kinda asking for an unreliable experience which can pee you off like mad . However if reliability isnt to much of an issue then yeah try it! I dont recall finding anything bad about it when i was eyeing it up but with all betas there is the chance of it.

I have an iPhone 4 which I use moderately and I charge it once every 3-4 days.

It's a superb battery, I've tried many Android handsets and I just can't get on with them, talk about beta software lol and the battery life is usually awful.

    Hi Hicks, of course!

I'd say it's between 1-2 hours use with the screen on per day. I have 2 emails accounts on 30 min sync also, on average, I'm on wifi about half of the time and have an average 3G signal for the rest of that time.

I've yet to find any Android handset that doesn't go flat stupidly fast, the Galaxy S II is an improvement but it's still not a patch on the iPhone 4

The Atrix for example has a huge battery but the awful software just destroys it, totally strange.

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

Well, going back to the battery life discussion that I started this thread for, I'm currently sitting on 99% battery remaining after more than 16 hours! OK, that's pure standby on 2G networks only, no data, but if I'm honest that's all I need ~95% of the time. My "smart" uses of my phone are fairly time-limited.

I'll have another good test later today though, as there's a test match on so I'll be listening to that on tune in (via work's wifi, natch ) - I'll be interested to see how 5 hours of streaming audio over wifi will impact on the battery. At some point I'll also have to try 2G only with data enabled and see how much impact syncing email over 2G will have. Never messed about with a phone as much as this, and I'm definitely having more fun than is healthy...

@Hicks: really appreciate the offer to cook up a mod. What I might do is try the vanilla first and see how I go on with it, then drop you a PM if I want to try something different without commiting to the year's subscription.

    yeah sure np jim .

That sounds like an excellent battery life... if im honest my smart phone uses have dropped a lot since my hd2 and its only really for the email (and its just epic when i actually need it ), may have to setup something like juice defender see if i can set it up better to just have data enabled while downloading email then back to just phone

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

I've been quite liking the 2g no data set up for standby battery life: I went to bed a couple of nights ago with my phone on ~ 26%, and decided to just leave it rather than charging over night. In the morning it was still at 24%! I'm going to do a test soon of 2g + data, since 2g data connectivity is actually fine just for syncing email and social networks. I think wifi data usages drains the battery less than 3g data, too, so when I'm at home or work I use 2g no data + wifi for email sync and that gives me very good battery life too. In fact, when the phone's idling it's basically just the 3G connectivity that sucks the battery.

I definitely plan to write myself a widget for switching between "dumb" / "smart" modes - perhaps have one button for 2G only / all networks, and one for data on / data off...
