Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

OK, I've just got myself a lovely Optimus 2x, and I'm basically pretty happy with it. Does everything I want from my mobile, quickly, and well.

But the battery life is in the toilet. I reckon I'm looking at about 20 hours of "standby", tops. If I have a long day then I'm not sure it'll last me from home to home. Now, I was expecting something relatively tanked with the high spec of the phone, but should I be excessively worried about that? Or is 20 hours of doing nothing about the best you can expect from a top end smartphone these days?

How long do your smartphones last?

EDIT: From the anandtech review of the o2x it looks like my battery is fine (based on the length of time I can browse / listen to tune in).

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

It differs with use hugely, but on my Desire I can get over 2 days on 'standby'.

It does have the base Andriod ROM on it though, with CPU tweeking for both speed and voltage, along with other various tweeks I can't remember off the top of my head.

If I start to use it for day to day stuff though, it'll plummet.

Always keep in mind though, while we all moan about battery life on phones, a lot of these things have more power than PC's only a few years ago. I remember a friend pointing out that my battery had dropped by half in a few hour journey using the satnav and we'd forgot to plug it in. It's amazing how easy people forget that it's working out directions by using a datalink, wifi locations and getting it's own location from a lump of metal 100+KM IN SPACE

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

on my iPhone 4...if it's on standby and I barely touch it, then 3-4 days, easily. More if I have 3G turned off.

If I am using it "averagely" - so maybe 4 hours of calls, same of texting, bit of web browsing with 3G + bluetooth on - then 2 days

If I use it a lot; wifi on, BT on, 3G on, lots of calls/texts then a day.

2 days is about the average for a smartphone imo.

Just gone from a HTC Hero that would last around 24 hours including 3 hours talk time to an iPhone 4 that's giving me about 14 hours talk time (on 2g).

Fear not, I'm well aware of that I keep having to not think about the fact that my phone has a 1GHz dual core processor, 512MB RAM and over 6GB of solid state storage for fear it blows my mind

I do intend to do a phone only battery life test next time I unplug it (so, 2g networks only, turn off data completely, turn off wifi, see how long it lasts if I make it be just a phone). And I'll be writing a short review when I've had it a week or so. But I'll probably have started about 5 threads worrying about stuff between now and then anyway

EDIT: sounds like I should've gone for an iPhone if I was going to worry about battery life

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

My Motorola Atrix easily does 3-4 days of standby usage and even fairly heavy day-to-day usage I manage to leave it until I go to bed on the second day before I need to plug it in.

Much better than my HTC Desire, which despite being a brilliant phone in many aspects had an abysmal battery life after having it only about 6 months I was having to carry around an emergency charger to get it through a single day with moderate to fairly heavy usage.

Oh and may I add that I know plenty of people with iPhones that will barely last a day, particularly Iphone 4s appear to really struggle to maintain a good battery life over a long period (much like my Desire did).

Original Optimus tends to give me about 2 days without charging, under light usage.

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

Have you tried something like JuiceDefender, from the Market? This switches the battery drainers off when it's in standby, and wakes them again when you want to use the thing. There is a slight delay, but my phone went from 1 day to 3 days using it. If you set your mail clients to poll every hour or so rather than constantly, this will help too...

The Atrix is above average for battery life - the battery is about 33% bigger than what HTC use

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

Quick update to this thread before I write up a mini review (getting in practice for my business blog!) - have started manually turning off data and binding to 2G networks only unless I'm using the phone for something "smart" - I unplugged yesterday morning and 12 hours later still had 100% battery

Unfortunately last night I also had my first random shut down, which (having done a quick google) appears to be a known issue with some o2xs. Fingers crossed it won't turn into a serious problem...

Samsung galaxy s running on 2.3.3 usually runs 1 day with 2 hours calls, 40 messages, 30mins gaming and once an hour gmail polling

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

get almost 2 days out of my optimus 2x with using 2g networks, about 10 mins of calls, 50 texts, 1 hour of browsing web (with 3g, 2g mode disabled), 2 gmail accounts polling at 15min intervals.

Not really done much powersaving bar the 2g part, @ jim, reboot could be something silly like a baseband issue/ril issue/ battery calibration/bad app? mines rebooted once in its life but that was only due to a battery calibration issue after installing a new custom rom (it basically was on 1% really ) have a look at modaco forums or xda for custom roms etc, brilliant stuff .

Edit: im using the modaco fr19 rom, i hear the cm7 rom (over at xda forums) is excellent with battery life, however im not sure if they fixed the only con with it, the fact they havent managed to get the stuff required to enable A2DP so basically if you wanted to use bluetooth to specifically connect to an audio device to play music (my personal situation, steaming music from o2x to my a/v receiver if pc is off, without A2DP i couldnt stream music to my av receiver ) if you dont require that then it is a solid rom to use.

Alot of helpful advice/tips on both of them forums aswell .

i have a dock at work, dock at home and a charger in the car. My [HTC Desire) battery is abysmal. I have been experimenting with different roms and stuff recently though and i have never tried juice defender.

Might switch away from Leedroid as im less than impressed with most features.

Re: Smartphone Batteries - how long does yours last?

Well, sod's law, after praising it I've had no end of problems with it today. A couple of days ago it seemed to be taking an age to charge, so I ended up turning it off and charging it. Today it went from displaying 100% battery remaining to battery completely drained in about an hour, doing nothing more that sitting idle in my pocket. And since then it's been on to charge and has taken ~ 3 hours to charge only 25%.

Now, a quick google suggests that there are all sorts of common power & battery issues with the o2x, so I can't decide what my best bet is. Do I persevere with this one, maybe try a custom rom - I've half a mind on this being caused by some of LGs bloatware? Do I see if CPW will replace it under warranty? Do I see if I can get something else instead? Any thoughts?

EDIT: OK, I was suspicious. I rebooted. My battery is full. So, either the battery is not reporting correctly, or the OS is not updating correctly. If it's the latter a custom rom should sort it, and if it's the former it should happen with a custom ROM anyway, but then I'll have voided my warranty and wouldn't be eligible for a repair or replacement. Hmmmm...

I would take it back and try something else, never had any issues like that with an HTC myself.
