Mobile Phone or Mobile Devices Forum?

You may say I've got too much time on my hands, You may say it's a minor or petty issue but it still bugs me all the same.

Considering that Mobile-Device.Biz is part of Hexus and a lot of chat in here covers the topics of Tablets as well as phones and smartphones do you not all agree that this forum should be re-branded as "Mobile Devices and Accessories" to keep up with the changing trends?

    Your 2p is appreciated.

I would also include laptops too.

But then laptops are technically in the portable and SFF forum that's a subset of hardware.

I agree that the title should be changed to include all mobile devices, i.e. phones and tablets.

Laptops are better off in the hardware section since it comes down to the same kind of criteria - processor speeds, graphics cards etc.

IMHO,there should be an SFF PC section only. There are very few threads about laptops in that section anyway and most get posted in the hardware section anyway as they get more attention.

Since tablets and laptops are starting to converge, having laptops in a mobile computing section makes more sense IMHO.

I agree that the hardware section is a bit daft, and the SFF/laptop section severely underused for the reason you stated. However, I still think laptops should be under hardware.

It's true that tablets and laptops are starting to converge, but there is still a very clear difference between a tablet with Android and a tablet with Windows 7 (the latter should go in a laptop section imo).

Re: Mobile Phone or Mobile Devices Forum?

I think it's the clear definition in the actual hardware and software platforms that deserves Laptops and SFF a separate forum; they are Windows PCs in a smaller form. Smartphones and tablets often share the platforms these days and so therefore topics of conversation correlate more closely, and so this should justify the name change.

Re: Mobile Phone or Mobile Devices Forum?

Why not just split hardware into "ARM based" and "x86 based"? Keep mobile separate for non-hardware related mobile stuff...

Re: Mobile Phone or Mobile Devices Forum?

Because is every user of this forum going to know whether it is better to post an Android question in the ARM forum or in the mobile forum? It's not all about the processor architecture, it's more about recognising that a forum singularly specified for mobile phones rather than mobile devices is almost naive considering the convergence in this sector.

Re: Mobile Phone or Mobile Devices Forum?

I don't consider a laptop a mobile device tbh so for me "Mobile Devices and Accessories" fits the bill of the phones/smartphones/pdas'/tablets ect.

Re: Mobile Phone or Mobile Devices Forum?

A mobile device runs a mobile OS. Windows is not a mobile OS so laptops would not be included in that forum, but I agree, I think the forum should be geared towards devices using a mobile OS.

Re: Mobile Phone or Mobile Devices Forum?

It is an interesting idea. The pros are that a tablet and phone usdually share a si,ilar OS and therefore, apart from the obvious telephone function, the two devices are similar (I have yet to see someone trying to hold a tablet to their ear!)

On the other hand, it is possible that tablets may become more popular in their own right, the HP sale should that there is interest in the devices if the price is right, and if there is an influx of new models at lower prices, then themay well merit a forum of their own. Are they more akin to computers or phones?

As I said, it is a topic under discussion, but whichever way it goes, it will be kept under review.
