To root or not to root

    Hi All,
I wonder if the mobile savvy Hexites would be kind enough to answer some questions and provide some opinions on rooting my Android powered HTC Desire. It's on a Vodafone contract, I'm quite happy with it, but the main things I'd like to improve are battery life and space. I've heard it you root the phone you can control startup and background apps therefore increasing battery life, as well as save space by removing unwanted apps that are usually un-removable, and installing whatever app you want to SD.

So, are these thought wild hearsay, or is there some truth?
Would I need to know much to do it, or is a Youtube tutorial good enough?
Will it void my warranty, insurance, Vodafone contract?
If I don't like it, can I easily revert to factory settings?

    Thanks to all for reading,
    Max

Re: To root or not to root

On the desire, you have to also remove S-ON. It's an additional security layer which rooting doesn't remove. For example, you couldn't remove stock apps with S-ON.

I have the same phone as you. I'd reccomend Unrevoked for the actual root. To get S-OFF, you'll need to use AlphaRev. There's a link to the HTC Desire forums explaining it there. I personally haven't done it out of fear; I tend to bodge technology up But I daresay it's worth the risk.

    Good luck!

I dont think you necessarily have to S-Off the phone I think it depends on what H-Boot you're on. To remove the stock apps, you just flash it to custom rom such as LeeDroid. Did it my Desire and didn't have to make S-Off, although I did do it much later on it's life.

LeeDroid and many custom roms will give you much better battery life and if you have a large, fast memory card (8Gb, class 4 or above) then i'd recommend partioning with an Ext partition and using the Apps2SD so that most apps are installed & run from the card. So root the phone, then install a custom recovery rom (e.g. AmonRa or ClockworkMod) then in stall a custom rom. Personally i prefer the XDA developer forums to Modoco as there's more selection. Just read up and research, it's easy once you know how, here's a couple of threads to get you started.

No rooting in itself does not fix anything all it does is give you root access to the phone, hence the term.

After that you can flash all manner of modified stock roms or fully customized roms like leedroid or gingervillain which may fix the issue you are having.

I just got rid of my desire for a Galaxy S2 but on the question of should you root a desire I would say absolutely yes, with root and the right addon's it becomes a way better phone.

And the new alpharev means you no longer have to root and then s-off as they are now combined on one easy solution.

    Another recomendation for XDA developers.
Just be warned, you might get quite addicted to trying new roms. I am currently running ice cream sandwich on my Desire HD!
