In a contract do you pay for the phone or connection?

    Hi folks,

I've been told and read (fairly old content mind) that if you take a contract out with a phone, that the phone is yours as soon as you take the contract out and all the network own is the connection/sim, does anyone know if this is right?

And if I was to sell my phone when I get a contract before the contract is up, this is perfectly legal?

I know people who have sold there phones just as long as you keep paying your bill they are happy. You are in theory paying for the phone in the contract anyway!

I don't know about the legality of it, but if you keep up the payments and the contract ends successfully, there won't be any problems at all..

I sold my iPhone 4 to upgrade to an iPhone 4S, and as long as I keep up my payments until July, there isn't going to be any problems

Thanks for the replies all, they tend to match what I've generally come to understand about it.

You own the phone but the service provider still has a hold on it until the contract is fulfilled.

If you default on the contract the service providers reserve the right to charge you the full no contract price of any handset you take.

However all they usually do is bill you the full remaining amount owed on the contract.

Would all service provider's in the EU do pretty much the same thing Larkspeed?

To my knowledge yes. It's a pretty standard practice pretty well anywhere.

Providers don't make anything of the handsets themselves they expect to make the money of the contract costs plus the calls.

If you default the contract they will try and recoup that loss one way or another
