    Galaxy SII or Galaxy Nexus?

My contract is up, currently got a Galaxy S 1 (16gb model sim unlocked)

Currently Vodafone have some epic deals through a well known high street retailer

Galaxy SII: £0 (white) or £40 (black) upfront
    Galaxy Nexus: £100 upfront

    12 month contract, 300 mins, 3000 texts, 500mb web £36 a month

So I'm looking at £720-820 for 12 months inc cost of the phone

Anyone have any idea which is better? The Galaxy Nexus has iffy reviews but is newer and obviously getting ICS sooner being the new 'google' phone

Re: Galaxy SII or Galaxy Nexus?

I got the SII a few weeks back and looked at the SII, Nexus, HTC Sensation XE/XL and Nokia Lumia..

Nexus is good - it has ICS installed already, not coming soon.

But both it and the Sensation XL were a No without even trying them, they are massive, the SII is pretty big compared to something like the HTC Desire, or an iPhone, but still just about fits in my pocket OK, no way with the Nexus or XL.

The SII has a 4.3 in screen so overall is 5mm wider and 3mm longer than your S1
The Nexus has a 4.6 in screen and is 15mm wider and 4mm longer than your S1

I'd have a look at the Nexus in person before you commit to it, there's no way I could have something that size, as much as I love all the features I can get from a smart phone, if it gets so big that I struggle to use it as a day-to-day phone (ie be able to comfortably keep it in my pocket) then i'm out.

    Just my 2 penneth

Re: Galaxy SII or Galaxy Nexus?

    How epic are those deals?

You can get 300mins and Unlimited texts + 500mb web for £16.50 from O2... 12 month Simplicity = £198... and then factor in a SGSII for £380 or a Nexus for £506 and you're saving money...

Am going to wait til Feb and see what the SGSIII is like...

Regarding the size of the GN, I saw a dummy model a few weeks back and thought 'crapping hell that is far too big'.. and then last week saw a real one with the screen on and decided it wasn't as big as I'd initially thought... it's about 1cm longer than my HD7.

Phone is old now and showing some serious signs of age, even with 2.3.5 on it that is as good as it will get it's slowing down a fair bit at times, and the random reboot/freeze is annoying

My brother and a friend have an S2 and I had an iphone 4 I instantly fell in love with the s2 the screen, the thickness and weight of the phone are fantastic then there is the speed of the device its very nippy. I've also read the camera is meant to be decent but you can never tell the quality on the phone itself.

It's a shame the upfront cost is a dealbreaker as you'd end up saving up to £140ish depending what phone you went for...

Have you tried any custom roms? Cyanogenmod7 for example? Am thinking the ICS port looks too flakey to be used as a daily build.

Re: Galaxy SII or Galaxy Nexus?

I'm currently on stock 2.3.5 with voodoo kernel but it's just getting slow and the random crashes/freezing (screen with stay off until a call comes in) is getting annoying and I don't think a custom rom will fix that

Hang on, isn't 12x£36=£432? So contract price = £432 - £532? In that case, definitely cheaper than buying up front...

    Hmm good point.. £720 would be 20 months @ £36/month... so if it's only £36 for 12 months then you're #winning

.. and then it comes down to the SGSII vs Nexus.

SGSII will get ICS, has a better GPU and isnt as oversized as the Nexus. and will save you £60 (assuming you get the black one, think the white is a bit tacky)

Re: Galaxy SII or Galaxy Nexus?

The Galaxy Nexus does have a 720P screen too and having looked at one it does seems sharper than the one in the Galaxy S2. OTH,the Galaxy S2 seemed to have a more vibrant screen and does have a much faster GPU.

You can purchase a Nexus from Vodaphone for £425.
The phones are unbranded & sim free.

Agree, the phone is very wide but you will soon get used to it.
