You could try root it, not sure if i would. But if you are going to get a new phone anyway might be an option
You would have to root + S-OFF and then install SetCPU and underclock. There are plenty guides around, just google it
Before rooting/underclocking, try a hard reset if you haven't already.
You should root once it's working anyway. There are generally faster, more stable custom roms than stock.
Does the hard reset remove all the data from the phone? was hoping to get it to boot far enough that I could back it up before I do so...?
Yup it will. One of the biggest pros for rooting is you can back up everything very easily in CWM or Titanium Backup.
I'd try rooting it if you want to keep your data. It's a bit risky in case it crashes while flashing. If it's overheating you could put in the freezer in a food bag for a few mins before you try anything.
