Nokia Lumia 800 today has just bricked itself.

And of course one can't remove the battery.

No firmware updates, no dodgy software, it wasn't even dev unlocked.

Now just dealing with the quality customer service from T-Mobile.

Who the hell decided that making batteries non-removable on high end phones was a good idea?!

Reason I would not buy one without the option to remove the battery hope you get it sorted mate.

    Good thing its working again

I really hate phones where the battery is non removable. Phones should always have battery removal makes life soo easier when phone crashes or if there are any other problems.

Why do people think we want 1mm thinner phones, which have non-user servicable batteries, and piss poor battery life!?!? RANT....

Because Apple are making money hand over fist doing exactly that.

It's the world we live in I'm afraid.

My HTC Desire decided to give up the ghost last week - only 16 ish months old too

Gone back to using my now approaching 3 year old Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 which, despite being an old windows mobile phone, still copes rather well

    I don't get it.

Apple lost the desktop market because people like the choice of having a mouse with buttons.

It's as if the entire PC market is now saying "well if they charge more and have only one button, then we should have just one". Sad times!

I wonder how much it reduces the cost by to manufacture the handset.

It's easier to sell devices without replaceable battery - unibody looks better, and is smaller without the need for casing and connectors

True, directhex, but for me this is one reason why if I were going WP7 I'd be MUCH more tempted by the 710.

Re: Nokia Lumia 800 today has just bricked itself.

AMOLED and Metro just look the shizzel thou.

TBH the Omnia7 was perfectly fast. the only thing with the Lumia is much faster at is a bit of web browsing on the wifi, over T-Mobile it makes no difference.

I also think that clock speed is a marketing arms race. Why do we need more cycles, we aren't doing anything to use it (yet, dockable phones are different kettle of fish).

My fear is the industry is pushing us giving us only one option in a giant circlejerk.

    Unity,Metro on desktop,
Battery life piss poor, non user serviceable, Clock Speed.......

The real solution is to make phones that don't brick themselves!

Battery technology has got to the point now where the usable life is longer than the time you're likely to keep the device. The only benefit to having a removable battery is to swap one out if/when one runs out, at which point it's just as easy to carry a USB battery.

My fear is the industry is pushing us giving us only one option in a giant circlejerk.
I think it's more a case of simplifying/streamlining technology to make it more accessible to the average user. I think you're going to need to have to get used to it as tablets and smartphones are no longer the realm of dorks and nerds!
