    Sony Xperia S

    http://gdgt.com/sony/xperia/s/

I have one of these coming on Tuesday, O2 were doing a cashback deal via topcashback and I needed a new phone.

I'll most likely be unlocking and rooting from the get go. The initial reviews give it a lot of praise so I'm looking forward to getting my mits on it, I'll post up some impressions when it arrives.

    Re: Sony Xperia S

It's a good looking phone but some of the specs are a little last year. It doesn't bother me, the user experience comes first but sometimes, not always, the two are closely linked. Windows Phone is a good example. People harp on about the single core processors being used but the phones are very fast and the interface is buttery smooth. Interested to hear how you get on with it.

    Re: Sony Xperia S

My missus has had a play with it and says its a really great phone.

I was tempted as an update but the cpu being last years and the hardware buttons being obsolete soon I decided against it.

She told me that the tags are great. You put one in work one at home etc and then swipe your phone accross it and the phone will change settings about it.

The camera is supposed to be amazing as well

    Re: Sony Xperia S

Reviewers and commenters alike mentioned the CPU but I don't really game in my phone so I'd like to think it would be more than adequate I can't see it been an issue there also isn't a large range of phones out at the moment which sport a quad core CPU at least not without a heavy price.

    Re: Sony Xperia S

Indeed if you dont game much then the cpu should be fine.

The camera is supposed to be great and it has a quick shoot option so you dont have to unlock the phone to take pics.

Its a really nice bit of kit and the Light bar for the buttons looks cool although as I mentioned before the fact that ICS doesnt use hardware buttons makes them redundant unless sony are gonna repurpose them...

I run a custom ROM on my Galaxy Nexus S which has hardware buttons, and ICS doesn't display buttons on the screen so all been well if sony do get around to putting ICS on it, the hardware buttons would work perfectly.

Interested to hear your thoughts, especially on the screen, media playback, browser and battery life. I appreciate that as you chose it you like it, but still would like to hear! Have you used iOS much? Interested to hear a comparison too...

I've been using mine fairly solidly for the past few days. Firstly I need to say, it's hard coming from the stock look and feel of ICS to an older customised Android version. I can't wait for ICS for the Xperia or at least an ulocked bootloader for the O2 device, but enough of my little rant.

    - Performance - This phone is very niippy and I have yet to have any real slow down, the GPU in it is also very capable, I managed to run GTA 3 at full res and high settings with only a few fps issues which is very good, especially when the screen resolution is 1280x720! The 1GB of RAM seems to do wonders with multi-tasking too, app switching is great, it'd be much better if it was running ICS!

    - Screen - This is a bit of an odd one, the detail on the screen is fantastic, nice and sharp and very - very clear, however if you are using it for browsing the net and general app usage the screen isn't anything special. But as soon as you come to watch a video or view a photo the screen comes to life, it produces great colours. It's just a bit strange it isn't like this whilst using it for other purposes. - Another little side note, the auto brightness feature is a bit well, rubbish, it uses a sensor at the top of the phone and well it just doesn't work all that well, the brightness seems to fluctuate quite a bit.

    - Battery - It wasn't too impressive at first and it still isn't however I followed a tip on the XDA forums which involved entering the service menu and so far it seems to have given it a tad bit more life, but I've yet to have a full day without it requiring some juice.

    - Camera - Very impressed with this, it's quick and easy to take a snap and for a camera phone the quality is decent better than the iPhone and probably on par with the better smartphone cameras of today - my only issues with it is it saves the pictures as rather low aulity JPEG's and this can be noticed - the video quality is good too as you might imagine.

    - Browser - I sacked the stock browser off and went with Opera, so far so good, decent speeds and the 720p screen is great for viewing pages in full.

    - Buld Quality - It feels pretty 'together' the back comes off, it sits flush with the phone but I imagine you would probably snap it at some point as it's a bit flimsy when off. Other then that, the phone is nice to look at and the little crystal bar at the bottom gives it a little style. One quirk with it is the touch buttons on the device aren't too clever, I have developed a bit of a technique for this though, instead of trying to touch the little area for the buttons I swipe my finger up through it so I don't have to try get a perfect touch!

I got a bit of a bargain with the phone so I'm very happy with it, I'm not sure what deals are floating around at the moment though so I can't comment on the value of the handset.

    Re: Sony Xperia S

Thanks for the reply. Sounds good, but not great - I'm not saying it isn't nice by the way! I'm using an iPhone 4 at the moment, had a 3G before that, so I guess I've been a bit of an iOS fanboy really. Looking for something different, Galaxy note looks ace, but couldn't use it for a phone. Galaxy Nexus hasn't had the best reviews and the SGS3 will blow it away I imagine. HTC One X looks quite tempting as well, but thought that the 4.3" screen of the Sony might be the sweet spot....the hunt continues!

    Re: Sony Xperia S

Just thinking about this and I know I'd want little things like the hardware toggle switch for ring/vibrate. Even the Galaxy Nexus doesn't allow you to mute the handset from the lock screen now - any idea if ICS does for other handsets?

Sry I missed this but only just got back into the office with work.

I've had mine a week now and still liking it (although its been a learning curve after WP7). I am responsible for the telecoms at my firm and so, I get to use the Iphones, Ipads, HTC Desire S's and the HTC HD7 (my work phone).

I'll use the same headers as DannyM to make it a bit simpler.

    - Performance - No issues at all. Compared to both the desire 7 and the iphone 4 (not the s), this beats both imo. No lag on opening anything and the phone just feels fast. I would say that it is same as an Iphone 4s quite happily. I struggle to see why quad core processors would be needed....

    - Screen - Its lovely. The end. Best part of this phone by a long way. However, as Danny said, this does depend on what you use it for but for me, watching a tv/film on it while stuck doing overnight work and its a joy to watch.

    - Battery - Shocking is one word I could use. Granted, I came from an LG Optimus 7 as a personal phone but with my other experience, this is about the worst battery life I have seen. I charge up every night, unplug around 7:30am and with some mild daily use (checking emails at lunch, a couple of texts (less than 5!) during the day and a 20 minute blue-tooth stint when it is connected to my car, i am at 30% at 5pm. This normally means that I am having to charge it by 8pm as it has died. On a small note, I turned off the automatic network mode feature and set it to wcdma only last night and currently, the phone is at 81% at 13:40 so much improved. Still, its an annoyance but one I will live with now.

    - Camera - Very impressed with this. I don't own another camera and while the LG was shocking, this is very much down the other end of the range. I see no reason why I would want to own another camera for just taking general pictures.

    - Browser - I'm still on the standard browser and while I don't tend to browse that much on the phone, when I have - its been quick and easy to use.

    - Build Quality - Had no issues with mine but the flap over the USB port is quite annoying. The LG had one too but this is a lot harder to get off. I have also ordered a decent case for this as I am worried about damaging the phone over the next 2 years.

    Re: Sony Xperia S

Thanks for the reply. Good to hear real world usage and not just someone who thinks it's all awesome because they chose it! There are some nice touches to the phone, things like the NFC tagging sound like a pretty good idea, and the screen size is possibly just right as well. Shame about the battery, if it can't do a full day of moderate usage then it's just not something I think I could use. My iPhone 4 needs charging every night, but I do hammer it quite a bit.

What was the main reason you decided on it above anything else (or waiting)? Purely price?

    Thanks again by the way

Shame about the battery, if it can't do a full day of moderate usage then it's just not something I think I could use. My iPhone 4 needs charging every night, but I do hammer it quite a bit.

What was the main reason you decided on it above anything else (or waiting)? Purely price?

    Thanks again by the way
Price on contract mainly, and O2 had it on offer. I got quite a good deal on it with cash back so the cost per month is around the £20 mark. only £4 per month more than my sim only contract so couldn't really argue and my £160 lg phone was pretty much dead.

The tags work well as I use all 4 around the house, car and work to set various profiles etc. Only annoying thing is that the screen has to be unlocked to 'tag' the phone.

Battery usage today is a lot better with the network mode change. Still at 78% at the moment.
