OT:
I had a non-rooted Desire on 2.2 that upgraded the Marketplace to Google Play. Not a single problem.

I now have a Samsung Galaxy Note on 2.3, this too has upgraded to Google Play, also with no issues.

Like the others say, you might just be one unlucky mofo. If I had the problem I'd get your network provider (if you're on a contract to get you a new phone), or root it and put a shiney new ROM on there.

Are you close to the end of a contract? You could just upgrade to a shiney new more powerful device..
