Re: My First Android - What Apps?
Another vote here for Pulse - an excellent customisable news reader.
Also, Flipboard is a good magazine-style news reader.
Other apps I use very regularly:
Dolphin Browser HD,
Tweetcaster for Twitter,
Tunecast Pro,
Google Sky Maps,
Google Goggles,
GMote (Control Windows desktop),
Electrodroid (Great if you are in to electronics),
SmartTools (Good selection of tools such as spirit level etc).
As for games try these:
Batman - The Dark Knight Rises,
N.O.V.A. 3,
Osmos HD,
Mass Effect - Infiltrator,
Broken Sword,
Bad Piggies,
GTA III,
World Of Goo.

I recommend Shush! Great way to place your phone on silent for a short time, Twee a great way to track the television shows you watch and when new episodes become available. Floating touch customisable floating option menu for quick access to your most important settings on any screen. MX Player best android video player. Try to download the 4.2 camera apk if you can for photosphere pictures that look amazing. There are loads more the verge had a popular forum post where tons of unique suggestions were made can't find it now though :-P

Re: My First Android - What Apps?
Google Play Music is quite good now you can store your music in the cloud. I picked up Tunein Radio Pro when it was on a cheap offer - it's good but doesn't seem to like pausing/seeking in podcasts.
Skifta is a very good DLNA app (coupled with VLC).
XBMC Remote is very handy too.
If you've got time to waste, Dots, Temple Run 2 and the Simpsons tapped out will make you pretty unsociable.
Re: My First Android - What Apps?
I couldn't possibly live without LLama and UnifiedRemote
Re: My First Android - What Apps?
Camscanner was a total surprise and has made filing my receipts for work an absolute breeze. BBC iplayer seems good as well -tested it out with The Escape Artist yesterday as had a long train journey and it seemed to work very well having downloaded at home the night before (make sure you have finished the download before switching to mobile data...)
Re: My First Android - What Apps?
Baconreader for reddit. If you are using XBMC, Yatse remote is amazing.
