Phone Insurance, who are you with?

I have a Natwest "Advantage Gold" account, £12.99 a month (a few other perks aswell as phone insurance included). Just been on the phone to them to check terms of policy.

    £25 excess
    Realistically 2 weeks turn-around.
Typically a refurbished phone, and cosmetic condition cannot be confirmed. A cheque will be made if they cant get hold of the same model.

I don't like 2 out of 3 of those, anyone have insurance that guarantees a new replacement?

Mines just on my house insurance. Came out at about £4 extra a month.

Its worth breaking down the extra 'perks' that you get with those accounts and getting seperate quotes just for the ones you actually want, they often seem a lot better on the surface then they actually are.

Most are poor value with a single person's account, but great value when joint.

My Barclay's account is £6.50/month, phone insurance is just one of the perks (also get an extended warranty on all household electricals, plus lots of other stuff) and it's cheaper than the dedicated insurance Carphone Warehouse offered me! Not entirely sure of the conditions on mine, but since I'm paying for the account anyway it's pretty much irrelevant, and it's going to be cheaper than getting all those insurances etc. separately.

I have a similar policy with First Direct. Various insurance, discounts, break down cover bits & pieces etc. I have it covered on there (to to £300) for £30 though home insurance covers me for all valuables taken out the house with a £100 excess up to £1000.

Who's my phone insurance with? What phone insurance?

If I lose it or it breaks, I'll buy another one.

I'm with Lloyds, get it with my account, but the excess is £50 normal phones, £100 iphones, repair or replace though.

    This.
With the amount charged for premiums, unless I'm incredibly unlucky I'm likely to come out on top by winging it.

I've not looked into it for a number of years but the last time I did the exclusions on these policies used to be ridiculous, and most of the situations I may actually need to claim I wouldn't be able to anyway.

One of my friends used to work back office for a certain high street mobile retailer, and a large percentage of their profits came from insurance policies.

If I had a run of the mill phone, I'd agree, but since I have a several hundred pound smartphone, and I'm paying for my bank account anyway, I may as well have it insured - much easier to find £6 a month than over £200 in a lump sum. Plus, I've just found out they've added gadget insurance onto my bank account, so the Playbook's on there now too Must see what else I can insure whilst it's not going to cost me any more

To a point, I agree. I don't have a run of the mill phone, exactly, though. I have a dirt cheap phone that manages just fine as a phone, and is just about capable of holding a couple of dozen contacts. Smartphone, it ain't. It's more of a village idiot phone .... by which, I refer to the capabilities of the phone, not it's owner, before some smart alec says it. .

But on the wider point of insurance, all I can say is .... it depends what else you have, and on the coverage offered by policies with someone like a bank. Some "free" policies are pretty minimal, and have limitations or exclusions that make them, well, not exactly useful, but certainly not necessarily idea. The travel insurance, for instance, can be quite limited compared to a dedicated policy. And notice I said "can be", not "is".

Years ago, in the early days of cellular phones, I had insurance too. Then I realised that :-

    1) It was costing a lot, and I'd never needed it.
    2) I'd got almost as good "accidental damage" cover on my household policy anyway.

So, free insurance with a bank account might be a good deal, or might not, depending on exactly what it offers, and what you need, and what you may already have.

As for the bank account, I had a little chat with mine. The account now has some premium facilities,. but no insurance cover .... and no monthly fee. They weren't very interested in that, until I asked them to close two linked accounts and transfer the balance to a competitor.

And yes, there's a decent balance in there, but it's not exactly huge.

I'm going to weigh in here as well. Same here.

However, I do have an expensive smartphone. Having looked into all of the options, I realised a few things.

    1) All of the individual insurance policies covered accidental damage. Having seen what other people do to their phones, that means I'm subsidising them for their lack of care. Given that I take care of my things, it's very unlikely that it will be "accidentally damaged".

    2) If my phone does break somehow, and is no longer covered by warranty, then it will no longer be worth anything like what it was when I bought it, and I can probably get a cheap replacement of the same model on eBay.

    3) Orange apparently offer a replacement smartphone service whereby you pay significantly less than the RRP of the phone (afaik approx £120) for a replacement, assuming the original one was supplied by them.

Therefore, I'm better off just saving the cash and using it if I ever need to. Considering the layout for this phone, I did seriously consider insurance, given how bad the sting would be if anything ever happened to it, but then I remembered that in all the years I've had mobile phones, nothing has ever happened to them. Maybe it would if I left it at other people's houses, chucked it across the street to my mate, and left it in my pocket with keys and heck knows what else, but I don't.

Anyway, as for the OP's original question, I would firstly try your network, especially if you're on a contract, as when I checked their service was a lot more thorough than the specialist insurers, otherwise try someone like these guys: http://www.talkcover.co.uk/

Re: Phone Insurance, who are you with?

normally agree with insurance on mobiles, only considered it this time... ended up with insurance through our home insurers (kwik fit i believe), my dad got a new sensation at the time so it worked out very cheap for us.

Think we pay £50 a year (£4 a month) and that covers,
either unlimited or like 6 mobile devices (we went through the details and it covered more than what we needed), the mobile devices being games consoles / laptops / mobile phones

Wear and tear up to 3 years, so basically like a 3 year warranty on all items!
    Accidental damage including water damage
    Theft / lost
Money, i.e holding £500 in wallet i get mugged... i get it paid back (not relevent to the mobile but an added thing!)

And the excess was £25 i think, something low i remember that. I thought it was a bargain considering our phones are £300 mark each and my laptop is quite expensive... cant complain for essentially £2 each!.

Re: Phone Insurance, who are you with?

my friend just recently dropped his iphone 4.

When he first got his blackberry (few years ago), he took out insurance for it. He then upgraded to the iphone 4 and carried on paying the insurance. Turns out that the insurance company (for t-mobile) didn't switch over the insurance from the blackberry to his new phone, and won't pay for the damages.

the only insurance that makes sense to me these days are the ones you get with your bank.. at least they cover a few different things!

    This.

Served me well so far, I have mostly upgraded through the contract before I've had an issue with the handset.

The notable exception to that was the supposedly high end Nokia 8600 Luna. Nice phone, well built (glass & stainless steel) but had an issue with the microphone/earpiece. Other phones have been fine mostly

If you're a hiogh spender it might not be worth getting insurance as if the wosrt happens and you do lose your phone, the mobile company will probably do a big discount on a new phone to keep you sweet!!

RBS Royalties Gold Account, £12/month Phone Insurance free. Seems silly not to.
