Re: Samsung Galaxy S3 or HTC One X

I owned both phones the Galaxy S3 and the HTC one X, the HTC one X is amazing phone if it weren't defective I had to replace quite a few and even then it was defective each and every time so cancelled my contract. The things to look out for the yellow spots on the screen the screen ripples when touch the screen near the bezzle I would usually try and move my finger across the screen from side to side see if it had the dreaded screen ripple issue other know issue is the wifi going bust and intermittently. The HTC one X would have been an amazing phone it certainly felt like a high quality phone but it fell short from its exception due to poor quality construction. The Galaxy S3 on the other hand is excellently built though it feel cheap and plasticy but it works and does not have any of the above issues that I found in the S3 so I felt S3 was the best among the 2 I replaced the stock ROM with cyanogenmod and thus got rid of the annoying bloat ware from samsung. Hope this helps you figure which phone is for you.

I eventually went for s3. i like the phone, although i found the stock keyboard to be far inferior to the HTC desire's. I've fixed that with a download from the play store.

Ok I have a HTC One X and I love it. I've compared it to friends galaxy S III and the build quality difference is just out of this world. The S III seems plasticy and I just love sense

So far my thoughts have been.

I like HTC Sense (I currently own a Desire).
The HTC is slightly smaller, although, TBH, still a bit big I think.
    The HTC is cheaper.

I don't like HTC's decision to make the battery non-removable and remove the SD slot. (Although I've never replaced the battery on a phone before)

However, I went and played with both of them in a shop today and noticed the One X appeared to divide its storage as internal and phone. With Apps being limited to the internal storage which is only about 2GB.

I realise it has the same ability as the desire to move some of the apps to phone (sd on the desire) storage, but this seems quite limiting. Can someone who actually owns one of these confirm this is the case? Have you found it be limiting at all? Does anyone know if the Samsung really can use all its on-board storage for apps?

And of course, does anyone have any thoughts on choosing between these two phones? Any opinions on the Samsung touchwiz?
My opinion is to go with S3, as it is superior it many ways, not limited to the batteries. The apps partition is another matter, and Samsung has followed the direction set by Andriod 4.0 and have a unified partition, while HTC OneX made the bull headed decision to follow the old partition for their premium phone just to have access to the USB Storage mode instead of using MTP transfer.

Other than that, I find the UI to be incredibly smooth on both, but does prefer the one on S3 and I like the display as well.

A friend has an iPhone and has some games that are hundreds of megs. (normally complex 3d games but they still exist)
So, I'm not sure I want to risk being back in this position in a years time.

I think the reason this decision is so hard is they are both great phones, I can't see myself being unhappy with either of them.

Damn HTC. If they had left the one x with a removable battery and an SD slot I would have ordered one without a second thought.

My current thinking is that I will be taking the financial hit and going for the s3. But I'm going to wait until the 32gb version is available generally then see what prices look like. Also, my contract will have properly ended by then so I can switch network.
Absolutely agreed. This is one big negative point with me and made me shy away from ALL HTC product since Desire HD.

Your comparing the measly 100MB that HTC gave the desire to 2GB though. 2GB is bucket loads of storage for 'phone only' apps and they would have to increase in size massively for it to start becoming an issue.

Honestly i understand your frustration having been there myself but i promise you this isnt something you need to worry about.

I dont know if it is the same on the samsung but i cant imagine it being any different.
It DID increase in size just over the span of 3 years. from sub MB to some more than 1GB. And the trend will continue as the resolution and graphic gets better and processor gets more powerful.

So .. the Qn is, since ICS allows one unified partition, why did HTC stick with multi partition? just for access to the USB mass storage option?

You are not limited to 2GB worth of apps end of story, you can still copy them across onto the user data. Its like having a 32GB SD in the phone that you just cant physically take out.
I cant imagine the S3 is that different, it would still need to partition its internal storage because of the way android works wouldnt it?

Just looking at my phone now, i have a bucket load of apps and games installed, not all of the ones that can be have been moved to the user data storage and im still only using 700MB of the application data. The issue you had with your original desire will not affect the one x, and even if it does, there will be a way, perhaps from an HTC update or perhaps by custom roms, that you will be able to reallocate the available storage.
1st, not all apps allow transfer to SD card
2nd, the part that cannot be transferred is getting bigger as well
3rd, No, S3 ... in fact ALL android devices after ICS does NOT need to have partition to work any more. Which makes HTC's decision even more silly.

My wife has found some articles that say this is just the way Android needs to work and not a specific limitation of the One X. But, as the S3 also has a microSD slot I wonder if it presents its entire internal storage as one big partition and the SD as the other partition?
I think your wife probably found an old article. Since Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0 onward), Android devices no longer needs a partition for apps. Thus S3 have a single partition instead of multi-partitions.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3 or HTC One X

what are peoples thoughts on the LTE versions of these handsets. I've heard that the One XL has a lower resolution screen but more storage whereas the s3 is exactly the same, just with an LTE chip. I've narrowed it down to these 2 handsets I think.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3 or HTC One X

I'd say S3, but that's also because I have one, but that said, the One X is still a very good phone. Although Samsung are VERY slow to update their software, still on 4.1.2
