Galaxy s3 vs HTC One X

My contract is due for renewal and I have been eyeing up the S3 for some time now. I love my wifi 5 inch tablet which runs 2.2 (no idea if it will accept anything higher) and the logical progression for me appears to be the S3

However! and its a big however! a £99 however!

Virgin Mobile in all their wisdom (not sure if slating my employer is a good idea, but then i work for media, not mobile) have decided to stick a £99 up front charge on the s3, which I think is exorbitant given that their lowest tariff appears to be around £36 p/m. Now I am on a staff contract and will pay considerably less, but every penny is a prisoner and the less I have to spend the better.

So, the alternatives are to hang off and wait for them to remove this ridiculous charge (sure it wont be long, who is going to pay an extra ton when you can get one on another network for free) or go with the very tempting One X. Now the X appears to be almost as good, slightly smaller screen, no voice activation, possibly wont work as a remote and player for my TV, but not sure on that yet, but with a few nifty features that make up for this lack.

So, does anyone have experience of both, anyone work in a mobile phone store and can offer an educated opinion, would some apple fanboi like to pipe up and have his/herself ridiculed beyond the ken of common man?

I am in no great rush for this tbh, my own N97 mini still functions perfectly well, even if theres a distinct lack of apps etc, but as I control more and more of my network through my tablet I thought it would be nice to have an upgraded device. I can wait for the S3 charge to drop, just wondering if its worth my while.

All input appreciated, especially if I get to mock iphones

Re: Galaxy s3 vs HTC One X

Not had either but me and my wife both moved from HTC (Desire) to a Samsung (S2) end of last year and it's the last Samsung phone we'll be having, we both agree it's the worst phone we've ever had, the Samsung interface/implementation of Android is poor in comparison to HTC's.

If the voice activation you mention is VLingo like on the SGS2 it's pathetic, nothing more useful than for making fun of, I tried using it last week to give me emergency driving directions in Manchester, I said "Give me Navigation directions to Princess Street Manchester", after 20 seconds thinking about it "Sending text message to Manchester Climbing Centre - directions princess - sent"

Whether these have changed on the S3 I don't know.

The only thing, I hate about the S3 over the HTC phones I used to own are they put the power button on the right hand side, volume buttons on the left. It is so easily pressing them while you are using the phone...

Re: Galaxy s3 vs HTC One X

The first question is do you need additional storage, or replaceable battery? If the answer to either of these questions is yes the One X is immediately out of the running.

I've just upgraded from the original Samsung Galaxy S, and was tempted by HTC One X, but lack of expandable memory was a big problem for me (and I also wasn't keen on the locked bootloader). I ended up going for the Galaxy S3 and I'm very happy with it.
I'm not keen on Touchwiz, but unlike Barakka, I don't think that Sense really offers much either - I'd be happy with the stock ICS launcher. The beauty of android of course is that I have the choice to replace the launcher as I see fit (in this case with APEX).

I still can't see voice control as anything other than a gimmick so I can't comment on that. In fact I've disabled it on my phone as otherwise you get a slight lag when pressing the home key (as S-voice can be initiated with a double press of the home key).

With regards to TV control, I can't see this being too much of a problem either way. I'm assuming you have a Samsung TV (otherwise I'm not sure why the brand of phone would make a difference)? I have a Panasonic TV and their remote application is available in the play store - there appears to be a Samsung one as well as far as I can tell? In any event if it's DLNA certified then any DLNA server app will be able to stream media to the TV.

Its more about streaming media from the TV rather than to it

but aye, removable storage and battery is a biggie, back to the drawing board i think

Re: Galaxy s3 vs HTC One X

If it is any help, I recently posted a similar thread. I have an HTC Desire currently and wasn't sure about switching from Sense to Touchwiz. I've now decided to go for the S3 though. Just waiting for my contract to fully end so I can switch network. T-Mobile appear to be the cheapest for the S3. I'm also hoping that the 32GB version will become generally available soon and might push the price of the 16GB down a little.

PS. I am a VM customer and my son has a VM contract phone becuase they gave a discount to VM customers, no sign of a discount on the S3 though, it is significantly more expensive than O2 or T-Mobile. Someone at work got an S3 on O2 though tesco for a very reasonable price, haven't looked myself though.

Just went and checked Tesco. Tesco Direct have the phone on t-mobile (and O2) for £100 less than t-mobile do. But only offer one contract (£26 a month) instead of the plethora that T-Mobile offer.

aye, just very aware that even the highest package on VMobile would be cheaper for me than the cheapest contract on offer, before call charges are taken into account

Re: Galaxy s3 vs HTC One X

I've got my contract expiring soon too and have been looking at both these handsets, it appears the HTC One X is built slightly better and takes better photos, and the S3 has faster HW more Ram , bigger screen and a couple more gimmicks.. What does surprise me from the reviews I have read is they go into great detail about gaming potential, battery life, the Display , aspects of sense4 and Touchwiz, etc. But they say very little if anything about how well the handest performs when making a voice call and what the quality / clarity of the audio they produce. I think HTC would have a slight edge in that dept. with Beats Audio on the ONE X.

What would be the deciding factor for me would be how easy / safe to Root either of these devices, as my current handset a HTC-Desire HD, I temp rooted it on day2 then perm rooted via adb on day 4 of owning the handset, and whilst rooting does void my warranty, it did fully unlock the freedom and potential of my handset to use the opensource software that android is all about. Other benefits are unlocking to any network so could contract with eg Vodaphone or O2 but still use a pay as u go sim for orange Wednesdays at the cinema.

I would also root my next phone which more than likely will be either of these 2 handsets to put either AKOP-ICS or CM9 Roms onto them in personal preference over Stock Sense4 / Stock Touchwiz.

The main things I do not like about the HTC One X is no removable battery and no SD card slot , and they are the 2 things I like the most about the Galaxy S3.

I can't comment on the HTC devices, the sgs3 was easy to root (and if anything like the original galaxy s would be pretty difficult to do permanent damage to).

I *think* the one x bootloader is locked which may make rooting more difficult. Once I realised there was no expandable storage I didn't look any further though, so I stand ready to be corrected.

As for beats audio, that seems like a marketing gimmick to me. Isn't it basically just a preconfigured EQ?

got a small windfall from my pool league (we won a lot this year) so splashed the cash on the S3, i get the feeling that if i bought the HTC I would have been peed off every time i saw an S3

5 days without a phone now, S3 constantly resetting and black screening, waiting on replacement, not happy.

just a glitchy one tho, the actual interface is lovely

Re: Galaxy s3 vs HTC One X

Seeing as someone bumped this thread, thought I would provide a bit of an update.

Love this phone, really do, had a couple of issues with Kies (4 copies of every song, really Kies?) but a bit of tinkering and its been fine, tho yesterday it did decide to revert to internal memory and I had to resync it, twice..

Smooth interface, decent wifi, tethering, Teamviewer for controlling my desktop during the day when im at college or work, good mp3 player (will probably get a better app than the stock one soon tho). Camera leaves a bit to be desired imo, but a bit more used to my SLR so probably being picky there.

I tend to find myself tinkering with in spare moments, messing with settings, video clips etc etc, whereas my old phone sat in my pocket unless it actually started ringing.

Im now after an android tablet because its impressed me that much (tethered to phone its perfect for college).

Now if they would just release JellyBean... (not even sure why I want it, but its called Jelly Bean!)
