Question Help needed choosing a tablet!

    Hi all,

My wife and I are looking to buy our first tablet. We have a set of requirements that we've carefully worked out, but can't decide on which make to get as they are all 'cheapo' makes:

    9.7" - 10.1"
    1024x768+
    16Gb Storage
    1Gb RAM
    1GHz+ CPU
    MicroSD slot
USB to connect to PC (Wi-Fi Optional)
Google Ice Cream Sandwich (or easily upgradable to it)
Google Play Store/Market full access (approved or very easily hacked)
£150-£190 (Maximum literally not a penny more)

It will be used for reading E-books (PDF), Graphic Novels (PDF/CBZ), Magazines (PDF/CBZ), watching movies/TV episodes, listening to music, and some basic word processing. Gaming would be nothing more than freebies like Angry Birds!

It can only come from a supplier like Amazon.co.uk, Argos, Currys, ASDA/TESCO/SAINSBURYS - no ebay, etc.

The makes we've narrowed it down to as far as we can tell are:

    Gemini Joypad 9.7"
    Disgo 9.7"

    Other suggestions welcome.

Here are some links to help:

    Disgo DISTAB9104R 9104: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Disgo-DISTAB...1941257&sr=8-1

    Gemini JoyTAB: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gemini-9-7-i...1941307&sr=1-1

Any recommendations, personal experience? (Other than buy an iPad/GalaxyTab/Nexus 7 - LOL!)

Re: Help needed choosing a tablet!

I was looking for someone the other day and came across these which sounded pretty good and well built for the money:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/344245-scroll-...ablet-pc-54242

The only things that don't quite meet your spec are that it only has 8GB internally (but it takes MicroSD cards), and the Google Play support is officially not there, although apparently works fine.

Re: Help needed choosing a tablet!

Thanks for that one Fraz... never used EBuyer before... any good? Would prefer 16Gb built in storage for the money...

One thing I've not been sure on with Tablets is when they say Up 32Gb Storage via MicroSD do they mean you can use a 32Gb chip or that you can use a chip that when added to the base storage adds up to 32Gb? Eg. If the Tablet has 16Gb, dows that mean I can add a further 32Gb or a 16Gb to take it upto 32Gb total?

Some suggested this one was worth pushing the boat out for as it is on sale at Ebuyer:

    Yarvik Zetta 9.7" 16Gb: http://www.ebuyer.com/368617-yarvik-...t-pc-tab468euk

    http://www.yarvik.com/en/products/ta..._97/TAB468EUK/

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yarvik-GoTab...1953155&sr=1-1

    What does everyone think?

Is worth beg borrow or stealing for?! LOL!

Yarvik seem to have a good, friendly support forum...

Never had any problems with them myself. Other people's mileage may vary...

Not 100% certain, but I've always assumed that it meant the max size of the SD card you can insert.

Re: Help needed choosing a tablet!

    How about a HP Touchpad.
Positives: For the money you're getting a very high quality tablet that's equivalent to a samsung tablet
Negatives: You'd really have to put android on it to make it expandable.

You can pick one up on ebay for about £120 which is peanuts for what you're getting. Also, some chaps have perfected putting android on it. Personally, I use it as a great book reader, web reader, email etc and that's without changing it to android.

If you can get your hands on a touchpad, for that money I can't see you'll get a better 10" screen tablet.
Only thing to bear in mind if you plan on putting android on it, is that's a fairly uncommon resolution for an android device, and not all tablet specific apps are available (plenty are though)

32GB refers to the maximum size of the card (which is the top end of the sdhc specification) so would be on top of any internal storage. Some devices work fine with larger (sdxc), even if not officially supported.

Re: Help needed choosing a tablet!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'd rather, for our first tablet, stick with something bog standard and that doesn't need extensive hacking and that is buyable from one of the big name shops/etailers.

So it looks like it still comes down to:

    Main contenders
Gemini JoyTab 16Gb (Gotta love that name!)
    Disgo 16Gb

    Possible outsiders
    Yarvik Zetta 16Gb
    Storage Options Scroll Extreme 8Gb

So out of those which is considered the best?

Re: Help needed choosing a tablet!

Thanks for the recommendations, and no Tartanpimpernel we wouldn't buy from outside the UK as you are not protected.

Any way we've decided... *drum roll*... The Storage Options Scroll Elite 16Gb... all thanks to Fraz for pointing me towards the Scroll Extreme on EBuyer, I then discovered Amazon had the 16Gb version (the Elite) for just £172! (It'll be all your fault Fraz if it's no good! LOL!).

The reviews on the net were positive (by the time you've weeded out the "it's not an iPad" and the "it doesn't come with Google Play Store" which it says it doesn't anyway!) and it meets all our requirements!

So thanks for all the help. Will post a review to Amazon and this thread once we've got it and had play around!

Re: Help needed choosing a tablet!

It's OK Fraz I was just joking! We are very happy with out nice new tablet. It does what we need it to do perfectly, is easy to use and expand via MicroSD cards, etc. I'll be writing a proper review for Amazon and will stick a copy of it on this thread for anyone that is interested...

The only things I would add/change about it are - I'd add Bluetooth, and a dual core processor... other than that it's great!
