Nexus 7 alternatives & tech specs query

    Hi there!

I am in the hunt for a 7"-8" Android 4/4.1 tablet. Currently my choices are the new Acer Iconia A110 (because of a microSD card slot), the Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition (because of the bigger screen, excellent build and virtual surround sound), the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 (again with a slightly bigger screen, a microSD card slot and an excellent AMOLED screen) and the top dog Google Nexus 7. But i am more interested with the Nexus 7 in terms of "Is it worth the investment" even on a small screen?. I will be using the thing mainly for checking email/news/weather, the usual Youtube, WIkipedia, Twitter, watching movies and also gaming. So, i'd like to ask:

1, Is the actual GPU dual or single channel? And what's the frequency? Does it matter?
    2. Is the 1.3Ghz the base CPU speed? Or is it underclocked like what Apple is doing with its tabs?
    3. Aside from connecting a mice or keyboard what other stuff can the Bluetooth 3.0 standard do?
    4. Is it capable of wireless file transfer to & from a Macbook?
    5. I'm aware that it doesn't have Flash but can i still install them via the Google Play?
    6. Are they stereo speakers? Capable of surround sound? (some sound issues in some models i heard)

    Please advice. Thanks.

    Hi Gino,

Have attempted to answer all your questions..

1.. It's a Quad Core Nvidia Tegra 3 SOC meaning for the uses you've listed it will absolutely fly along, it's optimised for games so if you happen to fancy some HD mobile gaming it is well equipped.
2.. 1.3GHZ is the maximum speed for each core, although they will not use this if you are only doing light work.
3.. Bluetooth 3.0 enables file transfer and other stuff at up to 24MBit/S and of course has all the other stuff like HD audio streaming and lower power modes.
4.. I haven't actually tried it myself, but in theory yes - There are quite a lot of apps capable of this on the Play Store.
5.. Android 4.2 isn't supported by Adobe Flash, only up to 4.1. There are mixed reports about whether it will appear any time soon.
6.. The Speaker is Stereo quality, but only comes from one slit at the bottom of the back surface.

    Ben

Would it matter if a tablet has dual-channel GPU and dual-band wifi? Would it make the tab "faster" and better in terms of gaming/graphics and internet speeds?

Sound is quite important to me either thru the main speakers, via a bluetooth speaker or via headphones. Amongst the other tabs i've mentioned what would be my/your best choice in terms of sound?

I wouldn't worry too much in terms of capacity and i think 16GB is enough for me but the main/core capacity isn't 16GB am i right? Shall i hold on for that 32GB Nexus 7?

What would be the easiest way to transfer files (such as MP3's and movies) to & from my Macbook?

Really in terms of built in speakers you can't expect much, You'd be much better to get a pair of A2DP bluetooth headphones or a pair of normal wired headphones for good audio.

As far as dual-channel GPU, I'm not entirely sure you understand the meaning of it, otherwise you probably wouldn't be asking this question. The simple answer is, the tablet is FAST ENOUGH! Dual Band wi-fi means that the wireless device can operate on a higher frequency so as to avoid conflicting with other devices, but very few wireless devices actually support dual-band technologies.

Easiest way to transfer anything to an Android device is to plug it in and drag/drop the files over. There is no ridiculous iTunes programs required to sync movies and MP3s.

Can anyone enlighten me on a single channel and dual channel GPU please?

Samsung tabs has dual-band wifi and from what i understand it is better. again, could be wrong. Please explain.

And would you trust Acer with its build quality compared to say Samsung or Motorola?

Re: Nexus 7 alternatives & tech specs query

I found myself in the same position as you recently, gino, looking for a 7" Android tablet. But I'm lucky enough to have access through work to a whole bunch of them, so I was able to try out four: Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and Tab 7.7, the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD.

The Nexus is a fabulous device for the money. Performance is very good, games particularly seemed to run well. The Tab 2 7.0 is also good, but the build quality was a bit sub-par for my liking. But it really only took about five minutes using the Galaxy Tab 7.7 to convince me it's in a different league from the others. Its performance is almost as good as the Nexus 7 (ICS is a bit less smooth then Jelly Bean, though), the build quality is better than I've seen on any other non-Apple tablet and battery life is excellent. But it was the screen that sold me on it. That Super AMOLED plus screen is so good it's hard to describe it without sounding like an excited kid. The guys at work were gathered round it ooh-ing and ahh-ing.
