    Budget Smart Phone

    Hi guys,

My mum has tasked me with finding my dad a decent budget smart phone for my dad to use. He has always had really old crappy phones that he struggles to use and my mum wants him to have one similar to mine - Touch screen and Android.

Doesn't need to have any mind blowing features or specs, but I would like it to run one of the later versions of Android if possible be below £100.

Can anyone suggest a few phones worth starting with?

    Cheers guys

Huawei G300 .... but hurry, stocks are diminishing. The G330, out soon, is more powerful, but indications are it'll be above your target price. Though that's always a gamble until prices are formally announced. You'll have to upgrade it to get a later Andriod version, but the means to do it are out there, and an official upgrade is supposed to be around soon, if it isn't already.

It's not an iphone ore S3, but it's a lot of phone for the money.

    IMHO, of course.

HTC Wildfire S? Only runs Gingerbread though.

You may get it cheaper but saw it for £100 on PAYG in local Orange (EE) shop.

Sony Xperia Mini Pro (SK17i, not the older X10 version) £79 + unlocking the O2 SIM lock

The phone ships with Gingerbread, but both Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean (very early pre-release version!) are available on the XDA Devs forum.

It's not a very high spec phone, but was the only choice for me, as I needed a cheap Android phone with a slide out hardware keyboard. I don't miss a bigger screen at all, but the battery life could be improved upon (barely lasts through 1 day of heavy use). Oh and some numpty put the USB port at the top of the phone, instead of the bottom.

This does seem to be a very popular budget android handset, maybe worth while a trip down to your local ASDA
HUKD post has it being sold for £79 in store

ORANGE SAN FRANCISCO II - £63.98 delivered + removing the Orange SIM lock

Ice Cream Sandwich ROM is available on Modaco.

Great all round budget phone with a largeish capacitive touch screen. It's getting a bit dated now, but for the price it still provides good value for money.

Nokia 710. Has 120,000 apps that actually run on it. Unlike the sanfransico it never goes slow when a call comes in, or your making a txt/email.

Downside is you can't say run skype in the background.

My wife has this phone and actually likes that the USB port is at the top. Her charging cable comes up the back of her desk so when the phone is plugged in it is facing her right way up without twisting the cable back around it like you have to do on my GS2 with its usb port on the bottom.

Good little phone, well pleased with mine - does exactly what it says on the tin.

    Re: Budget Smart Phone

Thanks for all the advice guys! Sorry about the delay, passing of a family member & being made redundant has eaten all my free time! I am going to try and wait for Huawei Ascend G330 as that phone ticks all the boxes. I do want to try and get a 4" screen for him, and as this phone is going to keep him going for a long time the extra £ is worth justifying I think!

    Saracen... recommending... a smartphone?

I thought that was one of the harbingers of the apocalypse?
