    So tablet apps....

What's the deal with Android tablet apps?

Are they completely separate from phone apps, or does an app just have to support both platforms these days?

Do you get tablet specific apps, or do they just give you different layouts for low and high resolution?

My wife is looking at a Note II and I wondered if being a large 5.5" high resolution display you would get the tablet version of apps at all.

This is something I've never been too sure about as I've never had an Android tablet.

The OS is subtly different on tablets, so I believe this determines which version of the app you see in the play store.
I'm sure I've seen some custom ROMs with the ability to toggle phone/tablet state.
No idea whether the note is considered a phone or a tablet in this regard though.

    Re: So tablet apps....

some aps adapt them self so that a single version will work on either tablet or the phone and it automatically adjusts depending on what you are using, others you need a separate version. Some apps are just scaled up and no different

Have to go on a per app basis but usually there is just the one version.

    Re: So tablet apps....

By default, apps work on both. Some developers make a separate version for usability reasons on different devices, but there are no inherent compatibility issues unless you're in the unlikely situation of being on a Honeycomb device.

Since ICS, an app is an app. Although some can of course have a minimal spec version, this isn't actually anything to do with tablet vs phone.

    Re: So tablet apps....

Right that's cool, it's kind of what I thought, especially with ICS and above.

My better half has really fallen for the Note 2 after reading some reviews and watching review videos of it last night. She just wanted to make sure the kinds of apps she wanted would be available on it. With the large high resolution screen she should get all the note taking and journal type apps that would have normally been reserved for tablets.

Am I right in saying iOS is the opposite in that they have a separate app for each platform?

Nope - most (as in, almost all) 'iPhone apps' run on iPads without issue. Only badly designed ones have an issue - more so since the iPad has been out for ages now.

That said, in some cases it just makes sense to have a separate tablet app due to different capabilities.

Whilst phone apps will work, I thought a lot of Apps actually had seperate 'tablet specific' versions in the apple store?

    Re: So tablet apps....

I'm not sure how Android apps can detect whether they're on a tablet or a phone, but those that do seem to do it very well indeed.

For instance, I have Evernote on both my Android Jellybean phone and ICS tablet and the layout is different on each. Each version just feels right, yet they still function in the same way so you don't have to get 'used' to either way.

On the other hand, some freebie apps have never even heard of tablets, so just show the same stuff but really big.

Some do, yes. But Funkstar was asking specifially if the iPhone/Pad have different apps for each platform, which isn't usually the case.

    The general rules are:

iPhone apps work on the iPad
You can target an app at the iPhone only - but this isn't commonly done (and is normally to milk more cash out of people)
You can target an app at the iPad only - more likely due to device capabilities (mostly games and better screen use)
You can make an app that targets both iPhone and iPad

Almost any modern app falls into the last point these days. You can ship two binaries in one package with apps on iOS.

On iOS its kinda a technical limitation.

On Android there is no technical limitation at all.

Its all about the money, money, money, because of the price tag.

Devs can charge more for tablet apps, even if they do nothing more than the phone app. As such everyone wants you to buy both.

I think that's kinda an understood given, the question is more to do with, 'what is to be expected'
