Looking to get my mum a tablet....

As above really, looking to get a tablet.

She wants to be able to watch iplayer, check email etc, play some minigames like sudoku etc
    Likes the 10" format.

    What would be best?

Currently may be able to get a Surface RT with touch cover, 2 weeks old for £330 which seems to be the best option so far, but want to hear others

    !!!
Otherwise, Samsung Galaxy/Note tabs are quite cheap at the mo, and had cashback on them, not sure if they still have...

How does iplayer work on the nexus? I've read mixed things.

It streams now. Or at least, it does on my Nexus 7...

Ok that's good, why would you recommend it over other options?

It's pure android, so no fussy skins (HTC Sense, Samsung Touchwiz) to slow it down, you'll get updates as soon as Google release them, for as long as the hardware supports it, it's got the best screen out there at the mo.

I was mainly meaning compared to non Android, I'd agree it's the best Android option.

Re: Looking to get my mum a tablet....

Ah right. I guess it's down to preferences. Some people will say ipad is better, some say Windows RT. Android tend to be cheaper for similar/better specs of hardware, then it just comes down to software preference. The Nexus 10 has fantastic specs for a fantastic price...

Re: Looking to get my mum a tablet....

if iPlayer is really important, then sadly, you have to consider the Apple offerings, because thanks to the unique way the BBC is funded they can spend as much time in a loving circle jerk as they want.

The Surface has the advantage that iPlayer works in IE10, nicely. I've not tried downloading for offline, so I'd assume that won't work.

However the iPad version often lacks things the website version has (anoying as the 'smart' tv thing in my samsung does the same). It has a nack for finding the thing I wanted to watch, and not allowing that one to be played.

So its swings and roundabouts. However, unless your mum wants MS Word or Excel or PowerPoint or OneNote, to be able to just plug in a USB printer and it work, no fuss, or plug in a USB headset etc, there is little point taking the more expensive RT, over the £160 nexus.

Eh? The iPlayer app on Android works pretty much the same as the one on my Tivo at home - ie it buffers for a bit, then streams the program you want to watch...

If you use the iOS one, and the Nexus7 side by side, you can see just how much is missing from the Andriod version.

Additionally there was a good write up by someone in the beeb explaining how they just can't understand programming (they tried to justify why the andriod one was behind!)

What kind of things are missing though?

In the end she just wants to be able to watch things on it, not sure what 'features' she'd lose out on?

There is a website version for the ipad http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen/ works well in my experience.

They can support the decision on a purely statistical basis, for example the bbc sport apps was download with a 3 to 1 basis between ios and android. Any business would focus on the area with the most users.

I believe the iplayer on the nexus is much better these days, I've not tried it on my old nexus 7 for a while.
