    Re: iOS vs Android

Android is a much more fresh operating system and its not tied into the Apple eco-system where one-size-fits-all (apparently). There are a lot of features that you can do without "Jailbreaking" or "rooting" an android device, to get the same features from an iOS device you need to Jailbreak it and then if you root an android device the options are even more plentiful. Check out this video playlist for a comprehensive list of differences and explanations. The guy doesn't hate iOS (in fact he prefers it for the tablet eco-system) but he points out a lot about the two, going over the misconceptions about android and iOS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMiY1...FC66EC25CBE28E

You can do stacks more things in Android by default than iOS, but that's only a purchase consideration if you actually want to make use of that functionality. Personally, I don't, so I pick the better user experience instead.

Again, my HTC has had this for years...as well as starting the media player from the lock screen.

I think that's an HTC addition rather than something that's core Android functionality. My Nexus 4 definitely doesn't have this.

My galaxy s3 has Lockscreen music widgets and my htc`s before had this. You can even set up actions on the lock screen to open the Music app straight away.

Again with the notifications I`ve just swiped down on the lock screen and clicked a notification to be taken straight to the app.

SAme thing happens with my nexus 10...

I had an S3 for a while and the music controls always disappeared if you hadn't listened to music for a while. Any idea how you managed to get these controls to be persistent? Also, I could only swipe down the notification shade if my device wasn't secured with a PIN. I assume therefore you don't have your device secured with a code? Otherwise, how did you get it so you could swipe down the notification shade?

    Re: iOS vs Android

In your usage scenario it is not missing anything because you're a casual user like the majority of the market.

I've got an iPhone 4S, and have no plan to update it soon. I use it for MP3, very occasionally video (if I'm stuck on a train), very occasionally facetime, a 3G hotspot, checking email/web on the go, a quick shot camera, a few games and of course as a phone.

I can't think of anything which is missing. What are the killer features of Android? I appreciate that Android doesn't tie you in to Apple's App Store model (as much), and Android phones are available at different price points and form factors, but is that the only real functional difference? Am I missing something?

I've not seen this behaviour on an Apple device, but I think I must be missing something...

So what you are claiming is missing from Android is that you want to be able to go direct from a lockscreen notification to the relevant application, bypassing any lock which is present? Would that not be a big security hole? Why have a PIN lock (or alternative lock) at all with that behaviour?

In answer to your other point though, I think you are correct in that music lockscreen widgets are not persistant on android. I suspect if it is on iDevices it is likely due to the music application being much more tightly bound to the OS.

You haven't understood what I'm after. What I want is a notification to appear on the lock screen that when swiped/interacted with in some way, it immediately asks me to type in my unlock code, and then takes me straight to that notification. As far as I can tell, this is missing from Android.

In suspected that was the case on the other point .

In that [edit]case[/edit] I think you are right, at least in stock android.

Wrt to the music widget, I find the ability to control music playback from the notification shade in android a big advantage. Not sure if that is available in iOS?

I can do exactly that on my HTC Sensation which is 2 years old.

Yep, double press the home button and swipe to the right.

I can do exactly that on my HTC Sensation which is 2 years old.
Again, I assume that must be an HTC addon rather than an Android feature.

What you fail to understand is that even though it is a HTC addon, it's still Android. Imagine the iPhone with no apps added to it...

It doesn't really help me when I own a Nexus 4 though! I'd have to own an HTC to be able to get these features.

    Re: iOS vs Android

If I have the security on the phone then you cant pull the notifications down but then surely the idea of security on the phone is that you dont want people to see your stuff when its locked.

to me what you are listing as a feature of Iphone is a security flaw...

In regards to the music widget its only there when I am listening to music as i`m using stock. As others have mentioned there are widgets that can be persistent but I dont want that and besides you can have the music app on the lock screen and open it directly that way so...

I still don't think you understand. All I can see when I get a notification is that it's a text, email, missed call etc. it's only when I've swiped the notification and typed in my unlock code that you can see the content of said notification.

In regards to the music widget its only there when I am listening to music as i`m using stock. As others have mentioned there are widgets that can be persistent but I dont want that and besides you can have the music app on the lock screen and open it directly that way so...
What I want is a way to resume music playback from the lock screen, whether that be 5 minutes after I last listened to something, or 5 hours. I don't have an option for a lock screen music widget on my Nexus 4. Where did you get it from?

This is what you get when you double press the home button on the iOS lock screen. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=io...gWYw4CQBg#i=40

Pressing play will resume whatever you last listened to, even if it was yesterday when you last listened to it. This is functionality I've been looking for but failing to find in Android.
