    iOS vs Android

    Hi All,
I suspect that this will turn into a fanboi rant, but I'd prefer if it didn't. I've been reading a thread somewhere else where someone said that the iPhone is dated and missing features which are present in Android.

I've got an iPhone 4S, and have no plan to update it soon. I use it for MP3, very occasionally video (if I'm stuck on a train), very occasionally facetime, a 3G hotspot, checking email/web on the go, a quick shot camera, a few games and of course as a phone.

I can't think of anything which is missing. What are the killer features of Android? I appreciate that Android doesn't tie you in to Apple's App Store model (as much), and Android phones are available at different price points and form factors, but is that the only real functional difference? Am I missing something?

    Re: iOS vs Android

Widgets. Absolutely tied me to Android over iOS for this one feature alone.
At a single glance I can check many things on the main screen. No need to launch any apps, but if I do want more info, I can just click them. Not to mention fast toggling of features.

    No limits on folders.

Pads - I play various games / emulators with a PS3 pad on my tablet / phone.

The ability to reply to texts when they are received and not have to go to another menu (preference I guess, but speeds things up)

Being able to set any browser I want to be the default one.

The other things I have in mind are hard to quantify as they are mostly preference, but there are just too many 'can't live without' features for me. I hate typing without swiftkey now. I like being able to change my dashboard and themes depending on my mood. Texting others I find long-winded without goSMS. Being able put commonly accessed apps / feeds on the lock screen.

It's all about control really. If you don't like any part of iOS, you're pretty much screwed. The problem is that most people don't realise how dated some core parts of it are until you use the alternatives.

    Re: iOS vs Android

Agent pretty much summed it up.

Interactive widgets are single best thing to happen to smartphones, I have 5 screens with a bunch of real-time interactive widgets, its a real time saver, with widgets you can have various bits of information or control panels to change settings on your phone without going into any menus.

I also like the fact you can pretty much make Android look and feel how you want it to.

I must say, I have been using Android for a couple of years now so when I got around to playing on my girlfriends iPad it just felt dated and old, here is what I dislike about it:

You have to create an Apple ID otherwise its useless
you have to constantly click a back button which is usually somewhere at the top of the app you are running, but the one physical button on the device is at the bottom
You have to press that one physical button to go back to the menu and then click another app to use it, very tedious.
You just cant seem to do anything else whilst an app is open, unlike Andoird where you can browse other apps you have recently used or go to the settings panel whilst still having that app open.
I have had several apps crash, not what I was expecting from such a "solid" and simple OS, could be the app developers fault.

All in all, iOS feels ancient.

    Re: iOS vs Android

Choice of hardware. It's not an OS issue, but a platform one.

iPhone just seem so small these days. Used my girls iPod touch recently and they keyboard seems horrible compared to my One X (but then so does the keyboard on my works Galaxy Ace+).

I agree with the above too, Apple may have revolutionised the smartphone market with iOS, but they haven't kept ahead of the pack by any means. And in many ways are far behind the times.

The only thing that iOS and Apple to very well is integration. If you buy into the Apple eco-system it all works very well. Mac Book, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV... all working together via iTunes and iCloud.

(I think my 'i' key is wearing out after that last paragraph).

Totally forgot about that one, annoys the hell out of me whenever I have a quick shot of someone's iOS device.

Complete customization of your own Phone is the main thing your missing. Not only can you use the standard andriod build, add widgets, change your home screen.... you can install mod's to change the look and feel of the OS. I am running CyanogenMod on my S3 atm, which i am loving.

Also another bug bear, a lot of apps that are free on Google's App store are paid for on Iphone App store and they usually have less features.

Although andriod is not perfect, I get regular crashs of apps widgets and such like.

There are 3 others to consider these days, Ubuntu, Windows and Blackberry.

Interesting debate on slashdot on how and why android is less secure than an unpatched windows 3.1.

    Re: iOS vs Android

I typically find it's the other way around with Android missing things that iOS has. There are things that iOS does that Android doesn't that I just can't live without (such as lock screen music controls and swipable notifications and tapping the status bar to go to the top of a page/list).

When was the last time you used an android phone? Lock screen music controls have been around for years, same for the notifications.

My Nexus 4, yesterday. Lock screen music controls and notifications are bolt-ons in Android rather than core system functions. This means that every media player app you have has its own separate lock screen control which is overlaid the default lock screen instead of being integrated into it. I have yet found no way of making music controls remain permanently on the Nexus 4 lock screen.

    Re: iOS vs Android

Oh, so you know the option is there, unlike with IOS where you have no options for bolt ons as you put it.

HTC Sense has had screen lock music player for years as part of their OS, I'm sure others have similar software.

Options are fine so long as there is one that actually works as desired.

I didn't know HTCs had lock screen controls. How do you call them up when you haven't played any media for a while? I know that my Nexus 4 and Galaxy S3 only show music controls when you're actively playing media.

Neither, they're just features that Android is lacking.

When you say 'Swipable (sic) notifications, you mean swipe down to get to them or swipe them away to get rid of them?
Android had swipe down notifications for years before iOS had them, and Jelly Bean has swipe-away notifications when you're done with them.

I'm referring to notifications on the lock screen being swipable so that when you unlock the device it goes straight to that notification.
