New phone - £350 to spend...

    Hi guys,

I am in need of a new phone and have budgeted around £350 for one. I am a very heavy user so am price flexible if I need to be though.

I am currently torn between the nexus 4 and the Samsung s4 and am trying to decide whether the s4 is worth the extra £150 it would cost me. I would look to get them second hand/next to new so shop bought prices arnt to relevant.

I live the idea of having a sd card slot, for ease of transferring photos onto my computer, but also like the idea of wireless charing, a lot.

Screen size of around 4.7" works for me and I would not look to go much smaller. Not to hung up on manufacturers, and I would look at custom roms

I do a lot of multitasking if it helps, sat navigation, Spotify, browsing, emails etx

Can anyone recommend or advise me?

    Cheers guys

I can't help, as I'm not exactly a smartphone guru (arch sceptic would be closer), but a question .... presumably you mean sim-free? Hardware only? If not, excuse my ignorance.

But if so, I'm curious .... are not these phones far cheaper as part of a contract? Or are you locked in, or business contract, or whatever?

I'm having the same dilemma, although between N4 and HTC One. I can't really justify the extra over the N4, it's such a lot of phone for the money. Even the Google Edition of the One is probably going to be £360+, if it ever comes over here...

Re: New phone - £350 to spend...

Yeah, free as part a contract generally, but with a house move coming up and job move soon after that I want to make sure I know my allowance and signal capabilities before singing 2 years away with a network.

Staying sum only works out a bit more expensive but I like to vary my contract based on my spending, and with picking up the phones second hand ish helps keep it all a bit cheaper.

Good points. Thanks, that explains it .... and echoes exactly how I'd think, by the way. The cheapest route isn't always the best.

Nexus 4. It's ridiculously cheap for the hardware (just like its bigger siblings), and as you spend more on smartphones the law of diminishing returns kicks in pretty hard.

From what I've seen, I say Nexus 4 too - I can only think they're offering so much for so little as a cunning attempt to monopolise the market? All the better for us either way

Everyone I speak to have said that the best Android experience they've had has been on the Nexus 4, might be worth giving it a go.

Re: New phone - £350 to spend...

I've just got a Nexus 4 after playing with an S4. The S4 is a great phone don't get me wrong, but there were just no features it offered for me to justify the cost over the N4.

For the cost, the N4 is leading class

I got the Xperia T around 3 month ago now sim free and loving it.

Nice sized screen, high resolution camera, Playstation Mobile, Netflix and recently using Flixster as you can use the Streaming service with it for your Ultraviolet Collection. It is also DLNA certified and can wirelessly push content from your phone to your TV if both are on your home network.

It also has NFC so you can get the tags and place them in the car or round the house with instruction to say turn on hands free if in vehicle etc.

Has 8Gb built in memory and also an SD card slot which I have another 8Gb in there.

Re: New phone - £350 to spend...

I think the problem with the samsung phones is the plastic backing, for the money your paying for it I would expect a metal or high quality backing. The nexus 4 looks like a solid choice. I was going to go for a s3 mini but the nexus 4 is only £20 more so more food for thought.

www.swappa.com seems like a good site to get 'gently used phones' from the guys at XDA-Devs.
