    Motorola A1000

Well considuring i've only owned one single mobile phone for myself ever, I've found another phone that has finally attracted my attention enough to considure upgrading....

    http://www.symbian.com/phones/mot_a1000.html

Looks gorgeous has superb functionality appears to be light and compact.

Its the only problem, with having a company paid for phone for the last few years and now not having one, very little attention was paid to my phone (currently Sony J5e - about 3 years old) - and now i'm using it more and more regularly it feels rather dated.

Anything to rival the a1000 in phones coming out soon then?

The nearest thing to the A1000, would be the SonyEricsson P910. They both use SymbianOS and the pen-driven UIQ user interface, but the P910 isn't 3G compatible. The P910 is a very nice phone which manages to be a good phone and a good PDA at the same time (most devices are usually skewed one way or the other). It's got great hand writing recognition, superb battery life (16 hours of talk time!) and good design (the touchscreen is sheilded from scratches and accidental touches when the flip is up).

The BenQ P30 also uses SymbianOS/UIQ and will probably be quite a bit cheaper than the A1000/P910. This is at the expense of looks, IMO, though.

You might also want to look at the Nokia 9300 and 9500 series communicators. They're not touch screen though and the 9500 is big and heavy. Nokia are very excited about the 9300, which should indicate that it's a very, very good phone if you can live without wifi/camera. All these phones should be on Symbian's website.

The A1000 looks like a very nice phone though, certainly a big step-up from the A925 which it will replace. It does everything and it does it in a pretty small package. I have no idea when it's due out though and it will probably be restricted to the 3 network, at least at first.

    /me counters Aaron again

If you're interested in the other side of things, the new motorola MPX looks like a good alternative. it is a flip phone with a pretty big screen and full qwerty keyboard inside and doesnt look too big

This should be coming out some time soon, and will be showcasing Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003SE

    Resist the dark side!

The best estimate I can find for the Motorola A1000 is "Q4 2004". It's not been announced as part of Vodaphone's Chrsitmas 3G line-up, I assume that it will only be available on 3.

I'm not really a fan of Motorola phones, but this one is shaping up to be very good.

Been waiting for the Motorola A1000 to become available in UK and finally found one advertised at www.3phones.co.uk

But does anyone know where to get hold of the Triflash-R memory which this phone takes and what (if any) the max. size the A1000 will accept?

    thanks

No idea about the memory but...

£30 a month for 500 minutes, 1000 texts, free sports content and a free PDA-type 3G phone? Wow!

    Also available on
    www.halfpricelinerental.com
    www.onestopphoneshop.co.uk
    www.3gmobilestore.co.uk

Triflash memory is available from www.three.co.uk - £25 for 128mb

Officially it only supports up to 256mb..but someone at work has spotted a 512mb triflash online for £100..then lost the link

But then again - the A920/925 only officially supported up to 256mb expansions anyway and people were hapilly using 1gig cards in them with no problems.

See if you can guess who's been waiting for this phone since July when his contract expired...

The A1000 is certainly the pick of the '3' Winter collection. I personally wouldn't touch that network with a barge pole. I'd go for the P910 myself (if i needed a smartphone which i don't!)

I don't much like 3 but you can get the Moto A1000 for free on many contracts and it's as good as SE offerings. It's a shame it only works on 3G really.

Let us no if you get it on time Flibster, I was planning on getting one myself but after ringing around suppliers / 3uk included they were all saying the same thing not untll next week 9 Nov.
Then i had a rethink about the 3 network and changed it to a SE S700i on O2 just hope i don`t have the problems that others claim to be having or it will be going back for swap out.

    a1000

I'd be very interested to know the following:

Can you access the internet with the a1000 in the uk, and if so, what speed/transfer method does it use 3g or gprs? (will you have to 'unlock it'/is it easy...?!)

If connected to a computer (cable/bluetooth) can you use the phone as a modem, and again if so on 3g or gprs....?

    Thanks very much

Technically, both are possible with this phone.

However, I believe that 3 as a network does not allow you access the internet via their network (please correct me if I'm wrong).

    What a waste, eh?
