Kickstarter - wireless charging for iPhone/S3/S4/Note2 etc

Quick post to highlight a Kickstarter project which I think has potential. Basically a magnet/wireless charger plus receiver kit for several prominent smartphones (also works with factory-fitted chargers e.g. Lumia 920)

For ages I've wanted a wireless charging kit for the car so I can just put my phone on something without having to plug in a cable every time; this is the first one that will do that (with magnets to hold the phone in place), especially while supplying a decent charge as most others seem limited to 1.5A max (usually <1A). This one is confirmed at supplying 2A for release and is price-competitive compared with other wireless charging kits available - and they aren't as slick (the magnet is an excellent idea).

    Here we go: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...tphone-charger

Just to say, I'm not affiliated with the project any more than having pledged money towards it for if it succeeds, but I think people on here will be interested hence giving it exposure. (Plus I want it to succeed 'cause I want one!)

I like it. I'm still curious about the receiver, what does it enable you to do?

It lets you receive the wireless charging power for those phones which don't have a wireless charge receiver inbuilt (most at present). You fit it under your backplate, against the metal contacts already installed for wireless charging, and it receives power wirelessly and supplies it to the phone

So this is an adaptation of existing technology?

Just wondering though, why bother building receivers for older phones? If wireless charging proves popular, I'm sure future phones will have it built in.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Wireless charging obviously predates this Kickstarter project. So do wireless charging receivers for older phones (just check eBay). What is clearly different about this project is the mount for the phone - using a magnet to secure the phone in a no-fuss manner on a charging plate that can then be used on desk or in car. That video just shows wireless charging built into a case, which really isn't anything to write home about.
The second point which is different is the amount of charge supplied. While using my Note 2 for GPS/navigation/music with the screen on (obviously), it will drain up to around 1.5A current. Currently I have a USB charger which can supply this in car so I can still charge it while using it. However trying to find a wireless charging solution for it that provides enough power to charge while using it seems pretty much impossible. This solution will offer that.

The reason for supporting older phones is, I would assume, because there's no way they'll get the funding if they expect people to stump up cash to get a charger which may or may not be compatible with a future phone they may buy. This allows people to buy for the current phone. The chargers obviously support phones with wireless charging built in - it just means they can market to a far wider market

Ah ok, for some reason I thought the S4 already supported wireless charging out of the box and thats why I was getting confused.
