Question Enlighten me - pay monthly tariffs (especially Virgin)

Never had one of these 30 day rolling monthly contracts before. Tempted to go for one of the Virgin packages, but my inner paranoid means having a payment method (credit card or whatever) permanently assigned to an account like that is a non-negotiable no-no.

So - is it possible to have one of these and either limit it to a fixed amount and not permit Virgin to take any extra without authorisation? Or can I set them up without a permanently linked credit card? What happens if I miss the payment by a week?

Why not have a pre-pay 30 day "contract" like Giffgaff?

You don't need to have a card tied to them as you can pay through methods like Paypoint / Epay / Payzone / Post office. That means you can buy credit in a shop with cash, if you like.

Their 'Goody Bags' last 30 days, but you buy them in advance. A tenner gets you:

    For £10 a month get:

    500 UK minutes
    Unlimited UK texts
    1GB internet
    Free to giffgaff

If you want to end it, you just don't buy another Goody Bag. You can make them reoccurring if you like, but it's not default.

To answer your actual question though, I don't think you can do that with Virgin, but you can set limits on Tesco mobile. They all try to take payment monthly though. The severity of not being able to pay changes on a per company basis. Some cut you off, others only allow incoming calls - 3 have been known to refer it to a debt collector

What I don't mind doing is committing to, say, £15/month for a fixed period (i.e. the new unlimited everything tariff). Especially if I can get more by doing so than on pure PAYG. The convenience of autorenewal each month is handy, but I want it on the principle of a standing order, not a direct debit.

The way the virgin ones work (or at least used to/mine does) is they'll charge you automatically for going over your limit, whether that be in terms of minutes, or internet etc.

Not sure if there's a way of signing up so it will just cut off if you hit your limit, a GiffGaff goody bag may be more suited to your needs/wants.

Before I left the UK I was on a 2 year contract with Vodafone, but if I wasn't I would have gone with Giff-Gaff. It used to be the case that fixed contracts were much better value for money than PAYG, but GiffGaff really changed that. I agree with you that the autorenewal is a really nice convenience, but I believe that GiffGaff did have an auto top up option...

I'm with Virgin, give them a ring and tell them about other deals you've found on other networks, they gave me a deal of £9 a month for unlimited internet, texts and 400 mins
