Nexus 4, but you may not find one anymore for a price actually worth paying.

Android is fine. I was hesitant, but my wife just went out and bought me it. Now I have it, I wouldn't switch. Battery ok, not amazing, but no worse than other smartphones colleagues have. Screen quality great.

Nexus 5 due out any time now (ie October). You'd be lucky to get the Nexus4 anymore.

Sony phones, screen quality usually the thing that lets them down. Even their top-end one. Not Amoled/IPS IIRC I love the screen on the nexus 4.

Re: Trying to choose a new smartphone - which one?

Get a Nexus 4 off Google for £200 for the 16gb version (Here), get a £10 a month contract off Giff Gaff or Virgin/Tesco/Sainsburys mobile or whatever, and get a compact like the ones mentioned earlier. Even if you only keep the phone for a year, that's £26 a month equivalent. Plus the cost of the camera, of course. Keep the phone for 18 months and it's £20 a month.

Edit - or ignore all of the above, cos the Nexus 4 is out of stock.
