Cheap 9" and 10.1" tablets - worth it or false economy?

I haven't been following the Android tablet scene so I'm completely out of touch. Hoping that someone more knowledgeable can help me out.

I'm after an Android tablet that only needs to handle:
    • Web
    • YouTube
    • Gmail app
    • Work with a bluetooth or Wifi keyboard

Doesn't need to handle games, but reasonably fast 2D performance is a must.

    I'd prefer something with a 9" or 10.1" screen.

    I found this on Scan:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/101-n...microsd-hdmi-2 - £133

But no reviews. Googling for it doesn't turn up anything (only reviews of the older model).

    Then I found this:
    http://www.retailgadgets.co.uk/Steal....1-Tablet.html

Now supposedly that's got a 9.7" 2048x1536 IPS Retina display, 2GB Ram, it's 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and it's 1.6GHz Rockchip quad core. £290 reduced to £170. But again, searching for reviews the only site I find is that one.

Are these Chinese tablets being rebadged and resold under different names, hence the lack of reviews?

Anyone know anything about them? Having a 10.1" screen with that sort of resolution sounds great, but not if it's dog slow because the processor can't cope. Do they have some weird processor that won't run 90% of the apps on the Google Play store, or something?

    All guidance appreciated Thanks!

Yorkieshaman see my thread, this StelathX Telsa T4 seems like anohter re-branded Pipo M6 (chinese manufacturer), the spec is very good, and the price the cheapest I've seen so far (Ebuyer as selling a Sumvision branded variant at £180 soon)

    http://www.ebuyer.com/524797-sumvisi...oy297?MID=4358

For £170 it might be worth a gamble, but note it only has a 7600mAh battery, compared to the Sumvision's 10,000mAh, so I would assume the Sumvision model would last longer between charges, also the Sumvision has a slightly more up-to-date version of Android (4.2.2, as compared to 4.1) and arguably comes from a more respected and well known retailer.

I bought the wife a zoostorm sumfing 10" IPS 1gb and 16gb storage and its been fine. A few quirks, battery life has been decent. The screen is nowhere near asresponsive as a Nexus but its been fine (the screen cover is a bit of a pig).

Never heard of retailgadgets. Many sites censor their reviews; try and find a bad one....... Then they don't; Amazon is excellent in this respect.

After sales support is usually where the problems lie with these lesser brands. If you can find a rebadge; chances are the support is going to be much better; custom firmwares and the not should eb more available.

Re: Cheap 9" and 10.1" tablets - worth it or false economy?

Just to add a comment on cheapish Chinese OEM tablets in general, I got my stepson a 7" Ainol Novo Flame for Christmas last year, and it was well built and worked pretty much flawlessly (until he dropped it and broke the screen). I suspect if you went for something under £100 you might regret it, but once you get into £150+ territory there's no reason you can't get a well built tablet with a decent spec - after all, ASUS are selling the Fonepad for < £200 and they're a reputable manufacturer with a bottom line to protect. If they can do it (with an Intel platform, at that), there's no reason to think a Chinese OEM with a lower cost ARM chip can't produce good quality products

Re: Cheap 9" and 10.1" tablets - worth it or false economy?

I don't think it is so much re-branding, more contract manufacture to spec. Same tablet, but mighty have a lower clock to compensate for a cheaper battery for example. Screen is where cost is often saved though, my son has a 7" tablet with 800x480 display, it was very cheap but the display lets it down.
