Reluctant to upgrade mobile to Jellybean

I have read some scary stories following attempted upgrades from Gingerbread to Jellybean (Android 4.3) on Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 mobiles, such as severe lagging, freezing & even complete disaster. It is stated that 4.3 offers improved security that fights malware. Can anybody assure me that upgrading is worth all the hassle that others report?

I would try the upgrade and see how you get one.

I don't know the specs of the ace but no harm in trying it out. If it doesn't work for you, go back to gingerbread

Thanks deejayburnout, I thought of "sucking it & see", but wondered if it was possible to reverse the upgrade & how pain(less or ful) that would be.Very droll, Cat, you're obviously in a good mood today.

To be honest, I have no idea how to downgrade an android os however there will be a way.

Might have a look to see how myself.

Re: Reluctant to upgrade mobile to Jellybean

I personally don't know for that particular model of phone, but Samsungs are pretty easy to flash. If you find a rooting and recovery-install guide (try Youtube or XDA forums), you are set. I had a look and here might be a good starting point, take your time. Since it is your first flash, it can be pretty scary and you might think you bricked it when everything is fine. Read the links and go slow.

It is pretty hard to brick an Android phone. Even when I was new to it, I never had any problems and upgrading is as easy as downgrading, as is 'side-grading' (bastardisation of the word for installing a different ROM of the same version - used for different ROMs where each has been tweaked in various ways by different authors for performance, lightness, extra features or whichever way they wanted it). When Odin was the main way to flash ROMs, I accidentally put the completely wrong files in the flash slots and wrote over my phone with essentially useless data, but could still recover. So have fun with it.

Re: Reluctant to upgrade mobile to Jellybean

I have rooted before and as you say it was easy however I dont know if rooting is required to downgrade a stock os.

Its very easy to root using odin and custom roms. Might be good to use a custom rom as they are free of all the bloatware samsung are famous for.

My old S2 ran like a dream using a custom rom.

Re: Reluctant to upgrade mobile to Jellybean

Jellybean needs a lot more RAM than Gingerbread, maybe that is why people say it is a bit laggy.

Android 4.4 is supposed to be leaner so may be a favourite for custom roms, but we shall see.

Re: Reluctant to upgrade mobile to Jellybean

Anything less than 1GB RAM with 4.0+ is not a pleasant experience, certainly not with a stock upgrade with all the bloatware. Never tried a custom built Rom from xda though.

Yeah, I second that. Get a custom ROM for your ACE and it 'should' run fine. XDA site has tons of tried and tested guides you can use. If it'll run it, I'd say it's worth it
