simple question re mp4 player on cheapo phone

A quick question, minor irritation only really, I have mp4 capability on my spare cheap 'smartphone' T-Mobile Vibe, it records mp4 fine and mostly plays back likewise but occasionally imported files (ie mp4s sent from others) play sound only and just have a little shimmery cd/music note icon. As the files are all .mp4 with nothing to distinguish why some should differ, can't track down the cause of the glitch, any simple/obvious theories? Thanks.

Re: simple question re mp4 player on cheapo phone

Usually with video files, the file extension makes absolutely no difference. With my PC I can usually change extensions from mpeg to avi to mp4 and so on without it making any difference to their functionality.

Your phone probably only supports certain codecs, but it's not always easy to tell which is being used. A programme like GSpot can analyse the video and tell you what's going on behind the scenes.

Then it's just a case of transcoding with your chosen piece of software. There are several million options on the web, but can't think of any right now that spring to mind. I think I used to use VirtualDub a while back, but that was more for splicing and so on than just converting. There's probably a simpler option out there.

Right, thanks for your explanation - in my ignorance a supported file is a supported file, so assuming the right codecs are there, after that an mp4 is an mp4 is an mp4 afaik (though I grasp there would be exceptions such as hd); I see from what you say it is not that simple. I will look into your suggestions, thanks jim for the reply.
