Sold my Nexus 7...a good decision?

    Hi there!

I have successfully sold my Nexus 7 because i have several disappointments:

    1. Speakers sound are mono and tiny. Its not loud enough.

    2. Most good apps come out first then on Android later. Much much later. e.g. TV Catchup was on iOS for a long time before released for Android. FIFA13 is now out for iOS. Nothing on Android. I'm tired of waiting.

    3. Printing seems faster & simpler with iPads. With Android you have to have a paid app to do it whilst on an iPad you can do it "in-app" or within the browser.

    4. Screen is just a tad small for a "regular" tablet. I feel the iPad mini's 7.9" screen is just the right size. (never mind the screen resolution)

I have a Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 already so i thought having an iPad makes it "the best of both worlds" enjoying both OS. Sure the Nexus 7 have also many advantages against the iPad mini but...was i right in selling my Android tab?

    What say you people?

Re: Sold my Nexus 7...a good decision?

I don't like iPads, but I don't like Android either, so I'm hoping that Windows 8 on tablets won't disappoint, but I have a feeling if I got one I'd be waiting the longest.

There is a fourth option though and that would be seeing a tablet come out as a chrome tablet, which I think might work out OK, but who can tell until it actually happens, I'm not even too sure how different it would be compared to Android.

As for did you do the right thing? You did if you're happy with the outcome.

I'm personally not a fan of Apple products, but I must admit due to the fact they own the OS and the hardware most of the apps are highly polished and work with very few issues.

Only you can answer that - if the points you mentioned earlier were important to you then yes. They might not be important to other people though (judging by the popularity of the Nexus 7).

However my earlier point was that it's pointless asking if you were right to do something. You've already done it, so live with it, and if you change your mind you can always buy another one down the line.

Issue is simply apps at the moment.

There are few apps out there on Windows 8 RT. But that I think is because they are selling it wrong.

Its not a fondleslab, its not a fondletop, its the officefondle.

Windows 8 RT tablets have these set of 'killer' applications if you ever have to do work in office. It is simply un-matched. Not to mention the fact printing works, unlike the iPad and Andriod (I've not had any of my 3 printers work on either platform, all work on RT, even the advanced colour matching profile stuff).

The question is, what do you want it for?

My Nexus 7, occasional web browsing, its no better than my phone for that really, 4.5" to 7" just doesn't make the difference say going to 9 or 10 inches does.

The one thing I find my nexus 7 is used for is an afternoon long, e-reader. By this I mean if I'm own my own, I can go out for dinner in some exotic part of the world with it in my pocket/camera bag, read a book, watch some film/tv on headphones.

I would also suggest to OP that complaining about the speakers in a tablet, is like complaining about lack of employment in different north wales towns. Its completely pointless. Speakers in tablets are awful, all of them, unbarably so. I now pack a http://techcrunch.com/2012/11/17/gif...abra-solemate/ in my rucksack for such scenarios.

Re: Sold my Nexus 7...a good decision?

I know. Its all about the apps. And the apps (and smooth OS) are the bread & butter of Apple like i said.

Yes i can bring a bluetooth speaker when im on holiday but that's another addition to my luggage isn't it. yes it might be that biiig but still it occupies space and weight that's the main thing. I'm not asking for a tablet speaker with subwoofer and 7.1 surround sound. I just found the speakers on the Nexus 7 tiny & weak based on the devices i had in the past.

I have an Android 4.2 Galaxy Nexus phone and i can do mostly anything there anyway (Twitter, taking photos, check weather/news,etc.) with such a small device (because its a phone...silly!). I thought having an iPad mini can also have its perks meaning having "the best of both worlds" if you know what i mean.

My only issue with buying a product such as an ipad is the low-res screen, the price and the "limited" hard drive space. that is all.

    *sigh*

Mostly it would be for things like surfing and checking emails while watching TV or even from in my bed without having to go to my spare room where I have my desktop setup, so I can surf, but I also like how it would integrate with my XBox 360, so I guess on that basis alone I think the Windows 8 Tablets would make a perfect companion, plus the surface already comes with an integrated keyboard, which is a good bonus.

Re: Sold my Nexus 7...a good decision?

I looked at the nexus 7, and had the use of one for a while, but went for a kindle HD and haven't been disappointed.

It's more media focused than android, leaving you to use it as a media device rather than tinker away at the OS like you often do with bare android.
Pretty much perfect for me - apart from the lack of play store (which can be easily worked around).

Better screen than the nexus 7 and much better stereo sound, together with mini HDMI socket that the nexus lacks.

Re: Sold my Nexus 7...a good decision?

I prefer a normal Android tablet like a Nexus 7 as i have the power of the Google Play store in my hands. A overly-skinned OS like that of the Kindle Fire HD doesn't work for me unless i read a lot of e-books which i don't.

I would like to have a tablet with a smaller-than-an-8" screen like the iPad mini (or maybe a Galaxy Tab 7.7) that i can use and will often use for basic surfing, basic emails, saving/uploading photos (setting as wallpaper, attaching to emails, etc.), watching videos on-the-go (meaning when im in my bed or travelling), basic Youtube and games that i can only find on the App Store (or normally comes out first in the App Store) like Marvel vs Capcom 2 or FIFA13 which currently the Play store doesn't have.

All these fragmentation worries & issues are being addressed by Google and yet i still don't understand why such and such companies are still prioritising the App Store rather than Google Play store.

Re: Sold my Nexus 7...a good decision?

    1. I completely agree about sound on Nexus. They probably thought people will hold it close to face. Headphones do improve the experience as well as source material.

    2. I am not surprised given Apple was first out of the block and piracy Reputation of Android.

    3. I haven't used it myself but have you ever tried cloudprint by Google? It is a feature that is popping up on new printers with built-in WiFi.

    4. it is pocketable. Mini is nice too. I think the 7inch is going to help sell more 10 inch tablets as we get used to its limitations and want a `little but more. The category has only done well because it is just up from smartphone.

    5. That is an excellent combo since Android allows you to use it as a wireless hotspot.

Re: Sold my Nexus 7...a good decision?

The iPad mini has in my opinion:

+ Wider screen for greater viewing
    + Faster/better wifi chip
+ Clearer & louder stereo speakers
    + Better build quality
+ Best Apps & games on an App Store
    + Better bluetooth version

    But

    - So-so screen resolution
    - Too simplistic OS & GUI
    - Expensive for its prices
    - No GPS chip in wifi models
    - Always have to use iTunes when transferring files

    Nexus 7:

    + Speedy quad-core graphics chip
+ Overall higher screen resolution than iPad mini
+ Better OS than iOS (multitasking, customisations, etc.)
+ GPS chip in all devices
+ Drag n' dropping of files
+ Cheaper 32GB version compared to the 32GB iPad mini

    But

    - Poor build quality
    - Weak & soft "stereo" speakers
    - The odd crashes & freezes
    - Smaller overall screen size than iPad mini
    - Screen is not that bright enough
    - Poor & slow customer support and assistance from Google

    WHat you think guys?

Re: Sold my Nexus 7...a good decision?

The 0.9" screen difference for over the double price for the iPad doesn't seem like a worthwhile investment. Kitkat brings a lot of improvements to printing. Speakers aren't too much of an issue when you use headphones or get some aftermarket speakers but I agree it would be nice to have at least stereo speakers built in. In summary, I would have taken that Nexus of your hands in a heartbeat.
