can you use wired internet on a MeMO?

I'm planning on buying a ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 with all my Christmas monies. I've already done a load of research into which one suits my uses the best and this is at the top.

I only have a few questions remaining, which are as follows.


is it possible to access home network computers and internet via the USB connection and not using wireless?

or

can you use one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Unknown-UEA-.../dp/B000CCZP88 with one of these http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3dyna...ndroid-devices to allow for a wired connection?


wireless is turned off on my router for security reasons, before anyone suggests using that.
I'll be using the o2 free wifi when out and about, but at home the nearest point is 1 mile away and the signal is non-existent (checked with mates tablet)

home phoneline is with plusnet so cant use the BT Openzone free wifi


any other ways I've not thought about feel free to suggest them.

Easy answer - no.

The USB converters won't work because the tablet won't have drivers for it.

If you want to get the tablet online at home then you'll have to brave the perceived (and misplaced IMO) security risk and use WiFi. WPA2-PSK with a strong PSK should be more than secure enough.

I will have to try a wireless access point/repeater/extender (not sure on correct name at the moment but I do know what it is ) just for my room and just turn it on as and when needed.

I do have reasons why wireless wont be on all the time, just don't want to mention them and not going to talk about it on here.

I can't answer for that exact tablet, but in general tablets with proper USB ports work fine with ones designed for them: http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-revi...owViewpoints=1

For example, ASUS Transformer Tablets, it works through the Keyboard USB and the Powerport-to-USB:

*the TF101,
*the Prime TF201(T),
*the Pad300 TF300(T),
*the Infinity TF700(T).

In general, ASUS products have worked with devices like this as they have USB Ethernet enabled in the kernel.

just noticed agents post, but its unnecessary for me because ive just found the 'USB internet option in the settings page. obviously you'll need a computer turned on and plugged in to the network. so this post is for those of us who don't want to use wireless for any particular reason.


on the Memo - go to settings
under wireless & networks click on More
plug in usb cable to computer
the USB internet option should now be selectable so select it.

follow on screen instructions - select windows version, press next,
follow those onscreen instructions aswell
click finished.

voila internet via the USB cable provided in the box for an Asus Memo HD7

it shows up as an 'unidentified network' on the control panel > network page.


notes: first time connecting windows, 7 64bit in my case will install 'Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device' and that's the network device it uses to connect with.
the first time connecting you may not get the 'share' page on your adapter, just wait a bit for it to configure itself.

edit2: when on the 'share' page for your network adapter, click settings, then share all the different options, like http, pop3 and so on. so these services will share across.

so no need to buy extra wires or anything, it works with what you get in the box

edit: location based services don't work atall, nor does any app that needs them,
i.e. the navigation app keeps saying 'enable wifi to find location', but that's something I can live with as the location based apps will only e used when i'm out and about anyway
