I thought the conference started on the 9th - unlikely to see a 12 inch iPad, it'd be useless.
The only way I can see it'd make sense is if they made a touchscreen version of Mac OSx and ran an intel baytrail CPU in it. It'd give it enough power for simple tasks and yet the portability of a tablet, albeit a large one.
It wouldn't surprise me to see a 12" iPad at some point. Samsung has the NotePRO which is 12" and where Samsung goes, Apple follows! If iOS 8 is all it's cracked up to be regarding app interoperatability then I can see it happening sooner than later as it would remove a fairly major sticking point on iOS, allowing a proper connected workflow between apps.
BTW, iOS is a subset of OSX so you could say that it's the touchscreen version of OSX. I can't personally see the need for a full blown CPU on a tablet despite what Microsoft is trying to sell us. the current (and future) generations of ARM processors are more than powerful enough for what's required of a tablet.
Low powered intel atoms will allows a fully fledged operating system to be run without using a lot of power. It makes sense to use it and if MS used it rather than having an i5 (which makes no sense in a tablet what so ever) then I think they'd have had better success with it.
iOS has no way near the capability OSx has - it's not even like Windows 8.1 RT vs Full 8.1
I'd like to see a fully optimised touchscreen version of OSx that has the ability to transfer files to other computers without having to upload etc
Seems story gaining ground.
I found a telegraph story from 27th August and an international business news story from 11 hours ago saying 12.9 inch iPad due in 2015.
Don't have 5 posts so can't post a link, tho this might be no.5.
You can run fully fledged OSs on ARM CPUs so there's nothing to be gained from using Atoms. Current ARMs match Atom performance if not beat it.
What I'd like to see is iOS allowing easy transfer of files to computers (rather than going the OSX route which will never happen anyway). That way a 12" iPad would make a lot of sense. Eg Use it for quickly viewing photos making quick changes along the way, then throwing the pics over to a computer to allow the use of full blown apps such as Photoshop. iOS is designed to complement OSX, not replace it or even be superseded by it.
Samsung are charging £649 for the NotePRO. Apple won't be any cheaper hence the sticking point for many will be price. IF it's released...
I thought most ARMs were only 32 Bit?
I'm sure some designs are 64bit. Can't find links at the moment.
That's why I said most. The new Snapdragon 410 is 64 Bit I think and so is the Apple A7, both of which are ARM based.
If only Apple had released a 12" iPad with some kind of hybrid iOS/OS X. The iPad i feel still has some serious limitations.
I think Apple would charge a fortune for such a thing especially if it had a new OS and then you would have the hassle of waiting for software for it.
hopefully it will offer true multi tasking / split screen
