Yeah I got that impression. My co-worker seems happy with his phone's level of ignorance of him, so it looks like it can be done. All the options that track what you do seem well flagged, so they aren't doing anything underhand. The hook is they try and make it useful enough that you will opt in.

The most basic one is using a Google account to store phone numbers in the cloud. I haven't tried putting the numbers on the phone SIM.

My phone has started playing up, so I have been having a look around at possible replacements.

Annoyingly the Moto G 4G currently costs more than the new Moto G 2014, so I would be paying more for the smaller screen of the outgoing model. No guarantees the older 4G model will get an upgrade to Android L either, but I really don't want that bigger screen

I've never used a phone one handed anyway, so the "one handed" argument has never really been an issue for me. Having said that I still want something light and pocket friendly. Currently own a Nexus 5 which has a 5" screen using a minimal bezels and a weight of 130g which I think is ideal.

I sometimes have to take the phone out of my pocket to sit down. My old One-X compounds the problem by having a power switch on the top, so if I forget to take the phone out it sometimes resets because the on button is held in for more than 10 seconds.

For operation I'm sure a bigger screen would be quite nice. Perhaps I need a man-bag, or a chain so I can wear it like a huge medallion

Looks like the 5 inch Moto G hasn't got 4G capability. They can keep the bigger screen in that case.

Now you're onto something. You can also set an analogue clock or a 3 pointed star as the screensaver to complete the look

If my consideration was a bigger battery or laptop replacement, then I would push that up to 5.5/5.7". Especially now with Office 365 available online.

My z10 is 4.5" device. I could probably stretch to 5" for better consumption/reading.

Re: [Poll] Are bigger smartphones and phablets appealing to you?

I usually use my smartphone to surf the web so I appreciate a bigger screen. My phone's screen is 5". I'm fine with that. Anything bigger though isn't what I would prefer since I still have it carry it with me.

My man-bag is why I think a 7" - 8" tablet is the perfect size: anything bigger won't fit into the man-bag, so I have to carry around a messenger bag instead - at which point an 11.6" - 13.3" laptop fits just as well as any tablet, but works for more use cases.

I do wonder how many people actually take phone calls on their smartphones nowadays, though. Seems to me telephone conversations in general are a dying breed - I rarely get a phone call from anything other than a PPI spammer. I guess if you know you're only going to make one phone call a month, holding a 7" tablet up to your face might not seem like a such a problem....

Perhaps because I am paranoid I would leave it somewhere. Trouser pocket seems better, less likely to walk off without my trousers.

A bluetooth earpiece could solve that, though I don't seem to see so many of those these days.

Perhaps a phablet could be built with legs, then it could follow you around like a tellytubby.

4.7" on my Nexus 7 is ideal for me. I don't want any bigger after seeing my friends phones. It's the reason I'm looking at a Galaxy Alpha, new phone and specs but with a sensible screen size

Re: [Poll] Are bigger smartphones and phablets appealing to you?

I currently have a HTC One X and the size is perfect for me, I'm due an upgrade and was looking at the Nexus 5 a couple of months back but these don't seem so readily available any more. I'm now waiting to see what comes of the Nexus 6 (X, Shamu) but if that does have a 5.9" screen as suspected then it is just too big for me. A phone does not need to be that big and will prevent me from buying it.

It seems you don't care much about SD card support so the Galaxy Alpha may interest you if you are prepared to pay the premium that the Samsung brand now demands. I am currently considering the LG G2 mini but that won't be an upgrade for you.

4.7 is where its at for me, any bigger and one handed operation just doesn't work. Saying that though I would like to try the new iOS to see if it helps usability. I think manufacturers need to stop making bigger and slimmer designs, and put a larger battery in for once.

It isn't so much about a larger screen with me than that screen's actual resolution. From a size point of view, I think 5.5 is the max I'd like my phone to be.
